Star Trek Prodigy Animated Series Gets John Noble and Jimmi Simpson as the Villains

Paramount’s latest foray into the animated side of Star Trek has added two actors with a solid sci-fi track record to its voice cast as the series villains. Star Trek: Prodigy has cast Fringe star John Noble and Westworld cast member Jimmi Simpson in the roles of The Diviner and Drednok respectively. The new series is not the first animated offering from the franchise, but unlike its predecessors, it is aimed at a younger audience in an attempt to bring a new generation into the 60 year old franchise. The series premieres in the fall and has already premiered a trailer last month, so the two newcomers are very late additions to the roster of stars already on the project.

The first trailer for Prodigy was released at [email protected], with a virtual panel hosted by some of the cast and producers Kevin and Dan Hageman. Kate Mulgrew is one of the names on the project well known to Star Trek fans, and returns to voice her role as Captain Kathryn Janeway, who appears in a holographic form in the series to mentor a young group of aliens as they take charge of the U.S.S. Protostar and attempt to keep it from the hands of the Diviner, who rules the mining asteroid of Tars Lamora and is on a brutal quest to track down the ship.

The official synopsis reads: “The CG-animated series STAR TREK: PRODIGY is the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences and will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.”

Noble’s Diviner is joined in his mission by Simpson’s Drednok, a “hard-hearted and ruthless spider-like robotic minion whose only purpose in life is to enforce his master’s will.” In the series the two will find themselves up against the young motley crew out to foil their mission, who are voiced by a stacked cast which includes Rylee Alazraqui as eight-year-old Brikar, Rok-Tahk; Brett Gray as hopeful seventeen-year-old maverick Dal; Angus Imrie as Zero, a genderless Medusan; Jason Mantazoukas as the sixteen-year-old Tellarite, Jankom Pog, who spends a lot of time playing devil’s advocate; Ella Purnell as Gwyn, the seventeen-year-old Vau N’Akart who has been trapped on her father’s bleak mining planet but always wanted to explore space; and Dee Bradley Baker who plays the indestructible blob Murf.

The show will join a growing list of Star Trek properties at Paramount, which includes new seasons of Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek:Discovery, as well as the animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks and the newly announced spin-off Star Trek: Stranger New Worlds. As the franchise approaches its 60th anniversary, it shows the reach of a franchise that can still deliver to its fans. While there have been times in the past when plans for new Star Trek series were few and far between, the new wave are ensuring that the legacy of the 60s TV show are carried forward into the next generation.
