Comparing LeBron James and Michael Jordan ‘unfair’ says Ray Allen

Considering the NBA has been going since 1946, that’s a lot of competitive history filling out the archives, packed with phenomenally talented individuals and teams who set incredible benchmarks. With every generation of the sport, new landmarks are reached and new benchmarks for success are achieved, which inevitably leads to comparisons being made with their predecessors.

Widely considered to be the best player of the current NBA generation, LeBron James is the self-styled ‘King’ of basketball. The 36-year-old boasts the most championships among active players, having won four NBA titles with three different teams during his career. The first two NBA championship crowns came with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013, followed by his third at the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016, before triumphing with the Los Angeles Lagers in 2020.

James also won the NBA Finals MVP award in each of those championship seasons, making him the only player in NBA history to win the award at three different franchises. What LeBron has managed to achieve is nothing short of exceptional, putting him up there with the best NBA players of all time. Unsurprisingly, those achievements and his approach to the game also draw inevitable comparisons, with many seeking to compare LeBron to Michael Jordan.

Ray Allen offers his unique perspective

As fans, it’s hard to deny that most of us have made comparisons between current and former players. Sports journalists and sportscasters are just as guilty of doing the same, drawing on their experiences of different basketball eras, which inevitably leads to them drawing parallels for past and present NBA stars. However, the fact remains that we are talking about individual human beings, each with their own unique traits and characteristics.

Ray Allen on LeBron, MJ comparisons: “LeBron is a power. He’s a mismatch. MJ is more like grace and finesse. The comparison is really unfair to both.”

This is entirely the point being raised by two-time NBA champion Ray Allen, who appears to be tired of the ceaseless comparisons being made between LeBron James and Michael Jordan, which has formed the subject of countless debates over the last decade or more. Allen played in the NBA when Jordan won two of his six championships with the Chicago Bulls, then towards the end of his own illustrious career, spent two campaigns alongside James in Miami.

Speaking on Scoop B Radio, the verdict of Allen is that it’s impossible to justify any direct comparisons between these two great players. “LeBron is a power. He’s a mismatch. MJ is more like grace and finesse. The comparison is really unfair to both,” explained Allen with sincerity, highlighting the different way these two basketball icons play their game. He feels there are more contrasts than comparisons, rendering such discussion pointless.

When making comparisons can be useful

Despite being in the twilight of his exceptional basketball career, LeBron James clearly remains hungry for more success, regardless of any comparisons being made about his own style or legacy in the NBA. After winning the 2020 championship, the LA Lakers were huge favorites to secure back-to-back titles last year, although the reigning NBA monarchs and their king of the court ultimately fell short, failing to progress beyond the First Round of the Playoffs.

Heading into the 2021-22 NBA campaign, the Lakers are being tipped for success again by many of the leading online sportsbooks, valued slightly behind the Brooklyn Nets who top the pre-season futures market. To find the most competitive odds and offers, Arabian Betting experts have reviewed and rated all the best basketball betting sites, only recommending those providing the biggest variety of markets and full coverage of the NBA.

Whenever comparing online sportsbooks, sites boasting a strong reputation for maintaining high standards of excellence is a key ingredient to consider, whenever choosing where to bet on basketball games. Interestingly, the pursuit of excellence is also something that LeBron is urging from his Lakers teammates this season. The clock is ticking on his wonderful career, which means he expects the very best from himself and the rest of the team.

LeBron aiming for another NBA championship

Fiercely competitive and renowned for his appetite for success, LeBron James knows that winning titles requires absolute focus and peak physical form. Ahead of pre-season, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has praised the “leaner” look to superstar player, who has worked hard to shed some pounds and improve muscle tone. That’s great news for the franchise, because James at his most explosive is always a huge advantage.
