And Just Like That… Sarah Jessica Parker Takes on ‘Misogynist Chatter’ Over Aging Sex and the City Cast

The upcoming HBO Max series And Just Like That… will see Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis reprise their roles as Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, continuing the saga that began in 1998 and marked an era in television. Over twenty years later, the new series “will follow Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.”

As filming began, the comments started coming in. A chunk of the world was astonished that the actresses appeared to have aged! Like wrinkles, and gray hair! It was like they were humans that have been on the earth for an extended period of time. Wild. Sarah Jessica Parker sat down with Vogue to address the critical response.

“There’s so much misogynist chatter in response to us that would never. Happen. About. A. Man, ‘Gray hair gray hair gray hair. Does she have gray hair?’ I’m sitting with Andy Cohen, and he has a full head of gray hair, and he’s exquisite. Why is it OK for him? I don’t know what to tell you people!”

“Everyone has something to say: ‘She has too many wrinkles, she doesn’t have enough wrinkles.’ It almost feels as if people don’t want us to be perfectly OK with where we are, as if they almost enjoy us being pained by who we are today, whether we choose to age naturally and not look perfect, or whether you do something if that makes you feel better,” she said. “I know what I look like. I have no choice. What am I going to do about it? Stop aging? Disappear?”

Michael Patrick King, Sex and the City writer and producer and showrunner on And Just Like That… had a similar response to the reactions of the reboot. “When we announced And Just Like That…, there were a lot of positive reactions, but one bitchy response online was people sharing pictures of The Golden Girls,” he said. “And I was like, ‘Wow, so it’s either you’re 35, or you’re retired and living in Florida. There’s a missing chapter here.'”

The double standard isn’t a new concept, it’s just one that some women are disregarding. The new school of thinking is a full embrace of aging, and it’s catching! Gwyneth Paltrow cheers herself on! “Of course I have wrinkles [and] grey hair, but I genuinely love it. This is who I am.”

Dame Helen Mirren (F9: The Fast Saga) tells it like it is.”I think women were just so terrified of having white or grey hair because it immediately put them into a different category. And of course, you are in that age group. I’m sorry, but you are! So, why not just embrace it, go a long with it and welcome it? Make it a positive thing as opposed to a negative thing.”

Halloween Kills star Jamie Lee Curtis had her moment of embracing the gray in the salon! “The epiphany came when I was sitting in a hair salon thinking, ‘What the eff am I doing putting a chemical on my head that burns?'” I looked for interviews where men had to answer the question of how they came to the decision to stop coloring or start coloring their hair. People, I looked. I couldn’t find any. It’s not their fault. They just don’t get asked the question. I’m on the whatever-color-you-wanna-rock team. Let’s all join! All follicles welcomed!
