Andrew Garfield Addresses Oscar Nominations Snubbing Spider-Man: No Way Home

Many fans were disappointed Spider-Man: No Way Home wasn’t nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, though it did get a nod for Best Visual Effects.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of the most successful movies of all time, garnering both universal praise with critics and immense profits at the box office, it wasn’t seen as Best Picture material in the eyes of the Academy. On Tuesday, the complete list of nominations was revealed for this year’s Academy Awards. While it’s not unusual for superhero movies to come up short in the Best Picture category, many Marvel fans were hopeful that No Way Home would be the exception in light of its accolades.

That didn’t turn out to be the case, though one of its surprise stars still wound up grabbing an impressive nomination. Andrew Garfield, who reprised his role as Peter Parker from The Amazing Spider-Man in No Way Home, is up for Best Actor for his role in Tick, Tick… Boom!. While speaking about his nomination with The Hollywood Reporter, Garfield was asked about the fan outcry to Spider-Man: No Way Home getting left out of the Best Picture race. Here’s what the actor had to say about that situation.

“I’m not able to comment on that, particularly. I really love that movie and I really love Amy [Pascal] and Jon Watts and Kevin [Feige] and, obviously Tom [Holland], and Zendaya and Jacob [Batalon] and Tobey [Maguire] and all the cast. That movie has been a kind of juggernaut of proportions that I don’t think any of us really expected. I can only speak for myself and I just feel grateful to be a part of something that is keeping cinemas alive right now, keeping cinemas full, and helping in that regard and making sure that the live experience or the communal experience of going to the movies remains intact. It’s very, very cool to see audiences still deeply longing for the thing that I know that we’re all deeply longing for. I think Spider-Man is obviously one of those movies right now and that’s so cool, and I’m so, so grateful to be a part of that.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home Obliterated Box Office Records

Sony/Marvel Studios

Spider-Man didn’t get nominated for Best Picture, but the film did get a nomination at the Oscars for Best Visual Effects. Even without the Best Picture nod, the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home can’t be denied. Even at a time when many filmgoers are still apprehensive about going to the theater, No Way Home smashed box office records to become the biggest film of the year. The success has also led to chatter that Andrew Garfield could come back for another Spidey movie of his own, as could fellow Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire.

Meanwhile, best of luck to Garfield with his Best Actor nomination. He is certainly well-deserving of the honor, but the same can be said for his fellow nominees. Garfield’s competition includes Javier Bardem for Being the Ricardos; Benedict Cumberbatch for The Power of the Dog; Will Smith for King Richard; and Denzel Washington for The Tragedy of Macbeth.

As for the movies which are up for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, those titles are Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog, West Side Story. Winners will be named on March 27 when the ceremony is aired on ABC.
