Tom Hanks Reunites With Forrest Gump Team After Three Decades for New Film

Forrest Gump star Tom Hanks, writer Eric Roth, and director Robert Zemeckis are set to work on the adaptation of Richard McGuire’s novel, Here.

Paramount Pictures

Tom Hanks is reuniting with his former colleagues, Eric Roth and Robert Zemeckis for a new project. The trio first came into the union for the 1994 Best Picture winner Forrest Gump, which starred Hanks, was written by Roth, and was helmed by director Zemeckis. Now, all three are going to work together on Here, an adaptation of Richard McGuire’s novel of the same name. The project has very recently gone into production and is reported amidst the films being eyed for distribution by major studios and streaming services. The film will see Hanks, Roth, and Zemeckis essaying their respective creative roles from Forrest Gump. For that film, The trio went on to win Academy Awards in Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director, with the film winning in a total of six categories.

Here was originally published as a six-page comic strip in 1989. McGuire then went on to write a 300-page illustrated graphic novel on the original, which was published in 2014. Here is regarded as one of the most successful and groundbreaking comic strips and is known for its unique approach towards short-form storytelling. The six-page strip depicted the story of a room and the events that occurred in that space at different points in time. The strip became famous for interlocking panels to depict a timeless and ageless story, wherein hundreds of thousands of years intertwine with each other, breathtakingly manipulating time and space in a single location.

The novel was an expansion of the strip and would be the one that Roth will adapt for the screen. Just like Forrest Gump, Here will go forth and back in time, but way beyond the thirty years span that depicted the character’s life in the former. The film is set to be produced jointly by Zemeckis’ ImageMovers and Hanks’ Playtone, thus making it a more cordial project for both as they will also execute joint duties as producers for Here.

The Long-Awaited Team-Up

Paramount Pictures

It will be the first time in the last three decades that the award-winning trio will work together on a mainstream film. However, Zemeckis has actively worked with Hanks since Forrest Gump. The duo collaborated on Cast Away, which also became a huge success and is included amidst Tom Hanks’ best performances. They then worked on the animated film The Polar Express, and are set to finish work on Disney’s live-action remake of Pinocchio before beginning work on Here. Hanks will essay the role of Geppetto in Pinocchio. On the other hand, Hanks is also awaiting completion and release on Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, a biographical drama based on the life of Elvis Presley, and will soon work with Wes Anderson on his next, Asteroid City.

Eric Roth on the other hand has had several successful projects in hand since Forrest Gump and has scored a total of seven Oscar nominations, the most recent being for adapting Frank Herbert’s novel for Dennis Villeneuve’s Dune. Roth has also written the screenplay for Martin Scorsese’s next, Killers of the Flower Moon, which also is another classic reunion of Hollywood a-listers and Scorsese’s longtime collaborators, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
