Disney+ Quietly Make Edits to Violent Scenes in Marvel TV Series

While Disney+ made some changes to older movies on its launch, Marvel’s second TV series has also had some blink-and-you-miss-it edits recently.

Many international countries have been watching mature content on the Disney+ platform for a while now. However, the recent changes to its U.S. version that has seen the introduction of parental controls and the arrival of Marvel’s former Netflix series such as Jessica Jones and Daredevil have caused several heated discussions about what should and shouldn’t be on a platform that has primarily been catered to family only viewing. However, it looks like some of those sneaky Disney edits that saw changes previously made to scenes of Lilo and Stitch, Splash and more have now been made to one of the MCU’s recent TV shows to remove some violence from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

While you would think that making a couple of changes to some blink-and-you-miss-it moments would go unnoticed, this is a time when someone somewhere knows everything about the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Therefore, even the most minor edits will be spotted by one eagle-eyed fan or another. So it is that two bizarre edits have been spotted on the third episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that remove blood from one scene where former Hydra scientist Dr. Wilfred Nagel is shot, and the moment Bucky Barnes throws a pipe that skewers someone in the shoulder from another. These changes can be seen in the video and images below.

The strangest thing about both of these edits is the scenes themselves are on-screen for less than two seconds, while much more violent and longer scenes such as a brutal killing by John Walker with Captain America’s shield in episode 4 have remained intact. While neither of the adjusted scenes makes any significant difference to the overall series, it has to be questioned why Disney has chosen to do this after the series has been on the platform for almost a year. At a time, they have introduced several content controls to allow users to dictate which shows and movies are made available to those watching.

Disney+ Has Had a Strange and Varied History With Censorship

Disney+

Since Disney+ launched, those who like to search for this kind of thing have noticed a number of minor changes being made to older movies and TV series. These have included nudity being cropped, pixilated or digitally covered in some scenes in the Tom Hanks movie Splash, the line “Don’t f- with the babysitter” being changed to “Don’t fool with the babysitter” in the original 80s version of Adventures in Babysitting, and a Toy Story 2 end credit scene of Stinky Pete being Sleazy Pete with two Barbie Dolls was completely removed.

These changes in their own right are not new, as over the years similar changes have been made for TV broadcasts. The issue that many people have taken is the inconsistency of the edits, and the fact that they mostly seem to have come without any kind of complaints being raised about them in the first place. With Disney+ now seeming to be censoring newly released content, the reasons behind some of the very minor changes is still a mystery to everyone other than those actually making the amendments.
