Liz Sheridan, Jerry’s Mom on Seinfeld, Dies at 93

Veteran actress Liz Sheridan has passed away. Sheridan, who is perhaps best known for playing Jerry’s mom on the comedy series Seinfeld, died on Friday, as reported by Variety. Her Seinfeld co-star, Jerry Seinfeld, has also spoken out about the sad news, expressing his sorrow over the loss of the 93-year-old.

“Liz was always the sweetest, nicest TV mom a son could wish for,” Seinfeld wrote on Twitter. “Every time she came on our show it was the coziest feeling for me. So lucky to have known her.”

An on-screen veteran, Sheridan is closely associated with Seinfeld as a fixture on the series who had appeared in all nine seasons. Appearing alongside Barney Martin as Jerry’s father Morty, Sheridan was the only actor to appear in every season of the show from 1990 to 1998. Her passing also comes shortly after the death of Seinfeld co-star Estelle Harris, who played George Costanza’s (Jason Alexander) mother. Harris’ death was announced on April 3, and Alexander similarly paid tribute to his TV mom.

“One of my favorite people has passed – my tv mama, Estelle Harris. The joy of playing with her and relishing her glorious laughter was a treat. I adore you, Estelle. Love to your family. Serenity now and always,” Alexander tweeted.

Back in January, the Seinfeld family lost another member with the death of Kathryn Kates, who had a memorable role as the counter woman at Schnitzer’s Deli, appearing in multiple episodes.

Liz Sheridan Was Also Known for ALF Among Many Other Roles

NBC

Beginning her career as a performer on stage, Liz Sheridan worked in various Broadway productions in the 1970s. By the 1980s, she appeared in feature films, going on to pick up roles in movies like Nickel Mountain, Avenging Angel, and Who’s That Girl. Sheridan would later appear in titles such as Wishman, Forget Paris, and Play the Game.

Sheridan was much more prolific on the small screen, scoring dozens of television roles over decades. She picked up a big role for the classic NBC series ALF, appearing in the show from 1986 to 1990 before picking up her famous Seinfeld role. Sheridan’s other television work includes Kojak, Archie Bunker’s Place, Newhart, The A-Team, Who’s the Boss, and Numbers, as well as voicing a recurring role in the animated series Life with Louie. More recently, footage of Sheridan was seen in the 2021 docuseries History of the Sitcom on CNN.

Behind the scenes, Sheridan is also known for her friendship with Bewitched star Elizabeth Montgomery. Often seen together, the pair were sometimes referred to as “Dizzy and Lizzie,” with Montgomery assuming the name “Lizzie” based on her performance in The Legend of Lizzie Borden. Sheridan also published the book Dizzy & Jimmy: My Life with James Dean: A Life Story, describing a relationship she’d had in 1952, which she says was the first real romance for both of them.

We offer our condolences to Sheridan’s family and friends at this time of loss. Her contributions will ensure that her memory lives on forever. May she rest in peace.
