Netflix is eager to continue the success of Squid Game, but fans shouldn’t expect new episodes to come anytime soon.
Netflix
Since the arrival of Squid Game on Netflix, the streamer has made no secret that they want more of the same from creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. As the surprise hit of 2021, Squid Game became a phenomenon that defies any explanation as to why it became the success it did. While Hwang was on board for more Squid Game, he has emphasized that he won’t rush out a second season. Now Hwang has spoken to Vanity Fair about the success of the series and how fans shouldn’t really expect new episodes arriving until 2024.
“[Hwang] only has about three pages’ worth of ideas that he plans to turn into a script, so there isn’t much he can say [about Season 2] except that there will be more games,” the report said. In addition to this, Hwang himself added as a tease:

“Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again. I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?’”
What is most impressive about Squid Game’s record-breaking success is that Hwang actually attempted to pitch the idea as a movie over a decade ago. In 2009, Hwang tried to write and sell the film, but at the time no one was willing to finance his idea, and they were not exactly complimentary about the project either. Hwang recalled being told the idea was “too unrealistic” to be made into any kind of popular film, so he dropped the script in a drawer and forgot about it for almost a decade. When he returned to it in 2018, the rest, as they say, became history.

Hwang Was Not in a Rush to Commit to a Second Season of Squid Game
Netflix
Following the initial success of Squid Game, Hwang said in several interviews that he had other things he wanted to work on before returning to Squid Game, and that he would take his time over deciding where to take the new episodes. However, that doesn’t mean he hadn’t already contemplated who might be the focus of a new season. Last year he said:
“While I was writing season one, I thought about the stories that could be in season two if I get to do one – one would be the story of the Frontman,” he said. As well as centering on The Frontman, season 2 may continue the same socio-political commentary as season 1, this time moving the focus onto the police. “I think the issue with police officers is not just an issue in Korea. I see it on the global news that the police force can be very late on acting on things – there are more victims or a situation gets worse because of them not acting fast enough,” Hwang explained. “This was an issue that I wanted to raise. Maybe in season two I can talk about this more.”
The first season of Squid Game is available on Netflix now, and with well over a year to wait for season two, there is plenty of time to rewatch the series again.
