Mike Will Tell the Tale of Mike Tyson Without Judgement

Hulu

Mike showrunner Karin Gist has revealed the approach to bring the life and times of Mike Tyson to the small screen, stating that the show has been made without judgment and will include the good, the bad, and everything in between.

Mike Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992 and sentenced to six years in prison. The boxer and former champion was released on parole after three years. Tyson’s violent behavior later spilled into the ring, when the boxer bit off a portion of his opponent Evander Holyfield’s ear leading to Tyson being disqualified and losing his boxing license. As Gist explains, Mike will not shy away from any of these incidents.

“The show is not supposed to be a love letter or an indictment, which is why we had to include all the good, the bad, and the complexities of both,” Gist explained. “Fortunately, as a global society, we are all talking more and more about things that were once taboo or only whispered about among friends — rape, sexual assault, consent to name a few. Putting stories like this in the spotlight and pulling them out of the shadows is crucial to moving forward and getting the conversation to the next level. The goal was not to shy away from the scary or uncomfortable parts of the story just because they are scary and uncomfortable.”

The limited series Mike comes from creator/screenwriter Steven Rogers and the team behind the Academy Award darling I, Tonya and showrunner Karin Gist (Our Kind of People). Mike is due to premiere on Hulu on August 25.
