Better Call Saul Wins Big at Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards

The Breaking Bad spinoff series Better Call Saul had a great night at the Hollywood Critics Association Awards on Saturday. Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, Better Call Saul was among the biggest winners of the night by picking up four big wins. This comes just days ahead of the very last episode of the show with Better Call Saul’s series finale airing on Monday.

The big wins for Better Call Saul include tying with HBO’s Succession for the category of Best Cable Network Series, Drama. The two shows bested SyFy’s Chucky, HBO’s Euphoria, HBO’s The Gilded Age, TNT’s Snowpiercer, HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, and Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

“It’s been a great joy, and I thank Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan for taking such a big chance on me,” Odenkirk said in his Best Actor acceptance speech.

Three cast members would go on to pick up an additional handful of wins. For his role as Jimmy “Saul Goodman” McGill, Bob Odenkirk won Best Actor in a Drama Series. Also up for the award were Brian Cox, Succession; Jeremy Strong, Succession; Kevin Costner, Yellowstone; Harold Perrineau, From; Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us; Daveed Diggs, Snowpiercer; and Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us.

Rhea Seehorn earned the win for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. It’s well-earned given her acclaimed performance as Kim Wexler, especially in the show’s final season. The other nominees were Sandra Mae Flank, New Amsterdam; Sarah Snook, Succession; Susan Kelechi Watson, This Is Us; Chrissy Metz, This Is Us; Christina Ricci, Yellowjackets; Smith-Cameron, Succession; and Sydney Sweeney, Euphoria.

Meanwhile, three fan favorites were all competing for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Gus Fring clinched the win for his role as criminal kingpin Gus Fring, though Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut) and Michael Mando (Nacho Varga) were also nominated. The other nominees included Jon Huertas, This Is Us; Justin Hartley, This Is Us; Kieran Culkin, Succession; and Matthew Macfadyen, Succession.

All good things must come to an end, and that is the case for Better Call Saul. Fans will see how Saul Goodman’s story comes to its conclusion, and it’s going to be bittersweet for viewers to say goodbye to these characters. After all, Odenkirk has been playing Saul Goodman since the criminal lawyer debuted in Breaking Bad back in 2009. This will also be the first time since Breaking Bad began in 2008 that fans of the franchise will not have new content to look forward to.

“I don’t have any plans right now to do anything more in this universe,” Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan recently said. “I know I probably gave the same answer at the end of Breaking Bad. I gotta prove to myself that I got something else in me. I’m not a one trick pony, that’s what I’m hoping.”

The final episode of Better Call Saul arrives on AMC and AMC+ on Aug. 15.
