House of the Dragon Showrunner Says the Series Could Expand into Different Eras

Ryan Condal has been given the monumental task of being the sole showrunner for House of the Dragon’s second season. Miguel Sapochnik, who served as co-showrunner for the series, departed the show following its debut in August. Managing a series as large as HBO’s latest hit seems quite tricky, with countless hours spent writing scripts, set design, make-up, costumes, and everything else that needs to be taken care of for House of the Dragon.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Condal wanted to leave the show after realizing its massive undertaking. However, during an interview with westeros.org, the showrunner/writer/creator says he would love to see more from the Targaryen family in the future. Additionally, he teases the possibility of exploring different eras in the show, citing Aegon’s Conquest as one of them.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I love Westeros, I love George’s world. I would love to be involved with it, as long as he and HBO will have me. It’s hard not to think about where things could go. The show is called House of the Dragon, it’s not called The Dance of the Dragons. It’s about the Targaryen dynasty in all of its forms, it’s about the Targaryen house, really, and I think there’s many fascinating periods of history to be told there. You know, there’s certainly [Aegon’s] Conquest. I think now we’re telling the story of this large civil war that happens when both sides have dragons, and I think it’d be fascinating to also explore a time when Targaryens are still in power but don’t have any dragons. How do they then threaten their enemies and how the whole strategy of war would change. There are lots of places to go. I would certainly love to be involved.”

Aegon’s Conquest refers to Aegon Targaryen, who successfully subdued six of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros with his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, and their dragons. The time period is often referred to throughout Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon and has long been a war that audiences wanted to see on-screen.

Could House of the Dragon Turn Into an Anthology Series?

HBO

The story of House of the Dragon has been entirely focused on the events leading up to the Dance of the Dragons through the first six episodes. Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik have laid the groundwork for what’s to come, and the depiction of the Targaryen civil war will take a few seasons to cover, at the very least.

However, even Condal admits there are plenty of other events throughout the Targaryen history in Westeros and beyond that could be explored. Aside from Aegon’s Conquest, the showrunner says looking at the family without the power of their dragons would be an interesting spin. We’ve hardly seen a Targaryen without dragons, as Daenerys received her three children at the end of Game of Thrones season one. The magnificent winged creatures have been a significant presence in House of the Dragon, meaning the Targaryens constantly have some form of power throughout both shows.

It would be interesting for House of the Dragon to do a few seasons focused on one point in the Targaryen family history before switching timelines to another. This could allow the show to be in an anthology-style format with the same House of the Dragon title while changing casts and crews to fit the new plot. Of course, we are many years from the end of the current project, but the idea is exciting nonetheless. Fans can see Rhaenyra, Daemon, Criston Cole, Alicent Hightower, and many more as we head toward the famed dance in House of the Dragon, premiering on HBO and HBO Max every Sunday at 9 pm E.T.
