Director Rian Johnson has pulled back the curtain just a little on the enigmatic Knives Out detective played by Daniel Craig, revealing that Benoit Blanc is gay. Revealed courtesy of The Digital Fix, Johnson was asked about Blanc’s sexuality while appearing at the London Film Festival after a scene from the upcoming sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery showed the detective living with another man. Check out Rian Johnson’s response below.
“Yes, he obviously is. And there’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with.”
Daniel Craig, who was also present at the event, then chimed in, saying, “No spoilers [but] who wouldn’t want to live with that person?” Both Johnson and Craig are clearly very passionate about the character of Blanc, with the pair eager to slowly reveal more about the crime-solving legend.

Knives Out 2 Will Reveal More About the Mysterious Benoit Blanc
Netflix
Rian Johnson has already teased how Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will uncover more details about the mystifying enigma that is Benoit Blanc.
“You definitely get to know him a little bit better,” the filmmaker explained, before revealing that the follow-up will find Blanc in more of a leading role. “In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist. In a big way, Blanc was the threat. He was almost the antagonist in terms of just the story structure, because you were worried, even as they got closer, that he was going to catch her and he was going to have to turn her over at the end. So Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.”
Much like its predecessor, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has amassed a star-studded supporting cast, with the sequel set to feature Edward Norton as Miles Bron, a tech billionaire; Leslie Odom Jr. as Lionel Toussaint, a scientist who works for Miles; Janelle Monáe as Cassandra “Andi” Brand, a tech entrepreneur; Kathryn Hahn as Claire Debella, a Connecticut governor running for Senate; Kate Hudson as Birdie Jay, a fashion designer; Jessica Henwick as Peg, Birdie’s assistant; Dave Bautista as Duke Cody, a YouTube star; Madelyn Cline as Whiskey, Duke’s younger girlfriend and channel assistant; and finally Ethan Hawke as Miles’s assistant.
Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery had its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2022. The whodunit sequel will then receive a one-week limited theatrical release on November 23, 2022, before landing on Netflix on December 23, 2022.
