Nancy Drew to End with Upcoming Fourth Season on The CW

It’s the end of the line for Nancy Drew. Ahead of the upcoming fourth season’s premiere, it has been announced that the show has been canceled by The CW. According to Deadline, there have been internal discussions for months about possibly ending the show with season 4, which is currently in development. With the show’s creative team fully aware of the situation, the fourth season has been developed with the thinking it will also be the last, and season 4 is said to end with a satisfying series finale rather than an open-ended cliffhanger.

“We are so honored and proud to have brought Nancy Drew’s iconic determination, individuality, and resilience to life in a years-long collaboration with incredible creative talents in front of the camera, behind the scenes, and among our studio and network partners,” series showrunners Noga Landau and Melinda Hsu Taylor said in a statement. “Our hearts are full of gratitude, knowing that we are able to bring this chapter to a close with intentionality, inclusivity and kindness — and of course with plenty of sleuthing twists, supernatural scares and star-crossed romance along the way. We are especially indebted to our wonderful fan community, whose connection with our themes and stories has meant the world to us. Season 4 will be a worthy and resonant payoff for their continued love and support.”

Star Kennedy McMann, who plays Nancy Drew, added: “It has been the greatest pleasure to begin my career as one small part of Nancy Drew’s endless legacy. What a privilege to walk in her shoes for as long as I have, to be inspired by her and to grow with her. I wish our incredible fans could feel the heart and passion of our crew that has been ever-present on and off screen, day in and day out since the very beginning. You are every bit a part of this incredible show as we are. Thank you, thank you, thank you for every ounce of passion and kindness you have shared with me and with each other.”

The CW

Based on Edward Stratemeyer’s mystery novels, Nancy Drew was developed for The CW by Noga Landau, Josh Schwartz, and Stephanie Savage. It premiered on the network in 2019, introducing Kennedy McMann as a new incarnation of the titular sleuth. The cast also included Leah Lewis, Maddison Jaizani, Tunji Kasim, Alex Saxon, Alvina August, Riley Smith, and Scott Wolf.

During its run, Nancy Drew has also seen a spinoff series that has already come and gone. In 2020, it was announced that the show would expand with the spinoff Tom Swift series starring Tian Richards. That show, based on Victor Appleton’s Tom Swift book series, premiered on The CW in May. The series was canceled the following month after one season, failing to attract the same levels of viewership as its parent show.

The fourth and final season of Nancy Drew doesn’t yet have a premiere date.
