Benedict Cumberbatch Says Sherlock Has A More Successful Reach Than Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch may have an important role to play in the MCU as Doctor Strange, but he still feels his time as Sherlock was more successful.

You would think that being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be a tough gig to top, but for Benedict Cumberbatch, he believes that playing Sherlock was more of a success than Doctor Strange. Cumberbatch returned as the Marvel sorcerer this year in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but despite the continued success of the Marvel franchise the actor still thinks that Sherlock has a greater reach as a TV series. While speaking in a profile piece for The Talks, Cumberbatch was asked about his move from TV to “bigger” Marvel blockbusters, but in response he said:

“Well, as far as this being a bigger pond than Sherlock… I don’t think it is. I think Sherlock, for me, has had a bigger reach than something like Doctor Strange because it’s television; it’s more democratic, more people have seen it. The reach that program has had is extraordinary. It was a sort of stink bomb that I knew was going to go the minute I said yes to doing the role. But I didn’t know just how big it would be — it surprised all of us who made it.”

Sherlock was a huge hit across its four seasons, and having only four episodes per season the series always left fans wanting more. While it took a long time for season 4 to be made, when it did arrive it did not quite hit the spot like its previous seasons, leading many to believe that it could be the last time we will see Cumberbatch as the brilliant detective.

Will Benedict Cumberbatch Return To Sherlock?

BBC

One of the main reasons why Sherlock’s fourth season took too long to make, and why there has been no movement on any further adventures of Baker Street’s genius crime-solver, is that everyone involved in the show is much busier now than they were when the first season of Sherlock was made. As well as Cumberbatch, his Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman, who played Watson in the series, is also part of the MCU, playing Agent Everett Ross in several Marvel projects including the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Disney+ series Secret Invasion, and has found a healthy career in Hollywood in movies such as Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy.

Martin Freeman has previously hinted that the most likely way Sherlock would get another outing is if it was as a feature length movie rather than a series, but so far neither he nor Cumberbatch have committed to anything due to their schedules. Although there is no doubt that fans of Cumberbatch’s version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creation would love to see him back again, Netflix’s Enola Holmes 2 has given Sherlock fans another option in Henry Cavill’s take on Holmes, with a potential for the character to get his own spin-off from the Millie Bobby Brown-led franchise. In addition to this, Robert Downey Jr. is also potentially returning in a third Holmes movie, which was teased earlier this year. Currently, this is a much more likely outcome than Benedict Cumberbatch reprising the role again.
