A Knives Out Mystery Trailer Puts Benoit Blanc on the Case

The official trailer has just been released for Netflix’s Knives Out sequel from Rian Johnson. Called Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the movie brings back Daniel Craig as the super sleuth Benoit Blanc to investigate a new mystery where everyone in the ensemble cast is a suspect. The movie will hit theaters on Nov. 23 with a streaming release on Netflix coming on Dec. 23, and you can get your new sneak peek now by watching the trailer.

“The mystery is not going to be what keeps the audience in their seats,” Johnson said of Glass Onion. “Remember first and foremost that you’re making a movie and that it has to dramatically work before it intellectually works as a puzzle. That’s actually still the hard part – creating a good story that feels unique and feels exciting and emotionally feels satisfying at the end.”

Craig also teased, “We had such an amazing cast in the last one and I didn’t know how we were going to top that, but we’ve equaled it. The working experience, just to come on set and make these movies is such fun.”

Johnson wrote and directed the film. He also produced with Ram Bergman while Tom Karnowski executive produced.

Along with Daniel Craig in the lead, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery stars Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

“I wanted to establish right off the bat that every single [Knives Out movie] is going to be a very different animal,” Johnson also tells EW, explaining how the new cast helps make the sequel feel different. “Each one of them must have its own reason for being and its own theme. It’s not just repeating a formula, but using this genre to create a whole new formula every time. Sometimes with series or sequels, it can become weird, stratified, fossilized from the previous movies. The fun thing to me is genuinely creating something fresh and new.”

Stressing the importance of the other cast members beyond a returning Daniel Craig, Johnson added, “It’s a mistake of the genre to think that your detective is your main character. Benoit Blanc is the constant North Star of all of these movies. But you have to think of him as the detective, not as the central character. The story has to function in terms of the suspects, the murder, and the victim. Benoit is weaving his way through that, but the dramatic stakes are never his.”

The official logline for Glass Onion reads:

In the follow up to Rian Johnson’s KNIVES OUT, Detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will be released in movie theaters for one week only starting on Nov. 23, 2022, followed by a global rollout on Netflix on Dec. 23, 2022. You can take a look at the official key art below.
