Westworld Star Says Series Got ‘Cut Off’ With Early Cancelation

Luke Hemsworth opened up about his disappointment at Westworld’s cancelation but said ‘it opens new doors.’

HBO

The cancelation of Westworld came as a shock to its fans but perhaps not too much of a surprise considering the dipping ratings and overreaching storylines that failed to keep viewer interest. One person who hoped that the series would have been given the chance to tell more of its story is actor Luke Hemsworth, who recently told Entertainment Tonight about how finding out about the show’s cancelation was a huge blow. He said:

“I was like, ‘F**k! Dammit!’ You hope these things go forever, but everyone’s got their own reasons. I’m very thankful for my part in that series and that journey was a big part of my life, but yeah it was disappointing I think the idea right from the start was to go full circle and come back to be about loops, to be about human beings and robots being stuck in that trajectory. Unfortunately, we get cut off, but it’s the nature of the world. You can’t get depressed about it. You move on and it opens up new doors.”

Westworld is based on a Michael Crichton movie that was a precursor to Jurassic Park, centering on the idea of a technologically advanced theme park going wrong. While the majority of the movie’s premise was covered and expanded on in the first season, by the third season of the HBO hit, the ride was no longer on the rails, with multiple timelines, changing locations and storylines that became too sprawling doing some irreparable damage to the series. While the fourth season was praised for tightening the reins, it was too little too late, and HBO decided to pull the plug and power down the series.

Will Netflix Save Westworld?

HBO

Following Netflix’s decision to throw lifelines to canceled shows such as Lucifer and Manifest in recent years, they have become the prime target for fans petitioning someone to revive the series and give it a proper conclusion. Last month, Westworld co-creator Jonathan Nolan expressed his hope that the show’s planned fifth and final season would be able to go ahead somehow. Will Netflix once again prove to be a savior to another lost show?

While it seems that Westworld’s creative team always had an idea that the series would conclude with a final season, it could end up being a quick win for Netflix, or another streamer, to pick up, especially if it comes with a caveat to also be able to stream the previous seasons. Manifest became a monster hit on Netflix when they aired older seasons ahead of the arrival of the new final run of 20 episodes, which themselves have proven to be a massive draw to the platform and landed at the top of the Netflix chart on their debut.

Whether Westworld will become yet another “canceled too early” series that could get a phoenix-like resurrection is something that we will just have to wait and see. For now, though, the journey to the center of the maze is certainly over at HBO.
