  • Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Directors Want to Surpass Expectations of Both Fans and Non-Fans Alike

Directors hope to surprise newcomers with the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons film, while still catering to die-hard fans of the game.

Paramount Pictures

Dungeons & Dragons has been a popular roleplaying game for almost 50 years and has garnered a huge fan base and pop culture presence. As such, adapting it to the big screen has been a daunting task for filmmakers. However, the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie, directed by John Francis Daley and Johnathan Goldstein, is set to take a unique approach to the classic game, generating excitement and anticipation among both fans and newcomers.

In a recent interview with IGN, Daley explained that the movie is a great opportunity to capture the spirit of playing a campaign without alienating people who are not familiar with the game or its mechanics. The directors aim to create a movie that appeals to die-hard D&D lovers and people completely unfamiliar with the game, making it accessible to a wider audience. Goldstein added that the film would subvert the expectations of the genre, surprising viewers who come to the movie with preconceived notions of what a fantasy adventure movie should be. While the movie will include classic elements of Dungeons & Dragons, such as epic battles, mystical creatures, and magical spells, it will also include unexpected twists and turns that will surprise viewers.

“People will be surprised by what the movie is,” he said, “because people come to a film like this with expectations of what a fantasy adventure movie is. And some of that is here, but there’s also a lot that will surprise them.”

New Dungeons & Dragons Projects Signal a Bright Future for the Franchise on Screen

Paramount Pictures

The Dungeons & Dragons franchise has had a mixed track record when it comes to screen adaptations. From the notorious 2000 movie starring Jeremy Irons to the short-lived 1983 animated series, previous attempts to bring Dungeons & Dragons to the big and small screens have been met with lukewarm reviews and low box office returns. But now, a new era for Dungeons & Dragons on screen is dawning. Canadian entertainment company eOne, which was acquired by toy giant Hasbro in 2019, has been hard at work developing multiple projects based on the franchise. And now, it looks like those efforts are starting to pay off.

First up is the new Dungeons & Dragons movie called Honor Among Thieves. The film boasts a star-studded cast that includes Chris Pine, Regé-Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant. It is set to hit theaters soon, and early buzz suggests it could be the first successful Dungeons & Dragons movie.

But that’s not all. Paramount Pictures is also developing a new eight-episode TV series based on the franchise. The series, which will air on the company’s streaming service Paramount+, is being described as the “largest-scope TV project that eOne has embarked on.” Rawson Marshall Thurber, the director of Red Notice, is writing the pilot script and will direct the first episode. With a high budget and an experienced team behind it, the series has a lot of potential to bring the rich, complex world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on screen.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is scheduled to be released in theaters on Mar. 31.
