Ben Affleck Says He’s Not as Miserable as He Often Appears, Has ‘Unhappy-Looking Resting Face’

Don’t be worried about Ben Affleck — he’s not as miserable as he might sometimes appear. On Tuesday night, Affleck appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote his new movie Air, a film he directed and stars in alongside longtime pal Matt Damon. While coming out to begin the interview, Kimmel immediately confronted Affleck about a Christmas party hosted by the Batman actor. Affleck called the party an “experiment,” noting he couldn’t’ guarantee it would happen again, as there was some awkwardness there that ensued. Kimmel had attended the party with his family and agreed that Affleck didn’t seem to be enjoying the occasion at the time.

“There was some awkwardness there, it did seem like you weren’t quite as psyched about the party as everyone else was,” Kimmel told Affleck.

To that, Affleck said that it was a “common misconception” that he seems unhappy at times, such as at that party. Kimmel didn’t seem to be convinced at first, suggesting that Affleck’s face pretty much says it all in situations like that. But Affleck insists he just happens to look miserable while feeling quite joyful on the inside, noting he has what he refers to as a “very unhappy-looking resting face.” He goes on to showcase how his face looks when he’s “content,” as well as when he’s “amused,” and it’s the seemingly miserable looking face he’s had in the viral videos.

“It’s how God made me, you don’t have to punish me for it,” Affleck jokes.

In February, Affleck went viral when footage and images of him at the Grammy Awards started to spread on social media. Fans were amused by how Affleck appeared to be miserable while standing by wife Jennifer Lopez, who looked to be having a much better time. Given how Affleck has a “very unhappy-looking resting face,” however, perhaps he was enjoying himself much more than what the internet had believed.

Another famous moment of Affleck going viral happened back in 2016 after the release of the crossover movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film was met with negative reviews upon its release, and footage of Affleck looking sad about the news had went viral at the time. “Sad Affleck” became a meme for a while, though Affleck would come to receive a lot of praise for his work as Batman in subsequent films; he’ll reprise the role one last time in the upcoming movie The Flash.

On what he learned from the “Sad Affleck” situation, Affleck would later say in a BBC Radio 1 interview, “It taught me not to do interviews with Henry Cavill where I don’t say anything and they can lay Simon & Garfunkel tracks over it; that’s one thing I learned!”
