Dianna Agron is addressing fan speculation around her relationship with Taylor Swift for the first time. Back in 2012, the duo were pretty inseparable and were often spotted out together in public or dressing up on social media. Some fans have wondered for years if the pair were even involved romantically. But in a May 7 interview with Rolling Stone, Agron said it was “funny” that people thought they were together.
In the interview, Agron was asked about how she partially inspired Swift’s song “22,” off of 2012’s “Red.” Agron responded, “Me? Oh, if only! That’s more because of a friendship than being the inspiration for the song. But I would not be the person to ask about that. I cannot claim that!”
In the liner notes for the song — which is all about friendship and good time together — Swift mentioned four names: “ASHLEY DIANNA CLAIRE SELENA.” Ashley is believed to be stylist Ashley Avignone, who worked with Swift at the time; they seem to have remained friends. Claire is seemingly a reference stylist Claire Winter Kislinger, who still works with Swift. Selena is Selena Gomez, whose friendship with Swift is well-documented. Dianna is for Agron.
Then the interviewer asked Agron about people in the media and fans who “shipped” her and Swift together. “Shipped?” Agron asked, and the interviewer explained it’s internet lingo for wanting or thinking two people are together. “That is so interesting,” the former “Glee” star said. “I. . . I mean, there have been many stories about my dating life that are so wildly untrue. That’s funny.”

Swift and Agron were dubbed “Swiftgron” by fans. The biggest source of the rumors — besides the fact that the pair spent a lot of time together, then seemed to stop being friends at all — was Swift’s song “Wonderland,” off 2014’s “1989.” Agron is a fan of the novel “Alice in Wonderland” and got a tattoo referencing it, which is visible in many photos. The song “Wonderland” uses “Alice in Wonderland” imagery to tell the story of a sweeping, doomed romance. Some fans interpreted the song as being about Agron. Swift herself has never confirmed or commented on the rumors that they were together as more than friends.
Agron’s dating history includes Dave Franco, Sebastian Stan, and Nicholas Hoult. In 2016, she married Mumford & Sons musician Winston Marshall. News of their split broke in 2020. Agron currently appears to be dating Belgian artist Harold Ancart. Meanwhile Swift recently split from her partner Joe Alwyn and has been linked in recent weeks to The 1975 frontman Matty Healy.
