Christopher Nolan Reveals If He Would Direct Another Superhero Movie

A few days before the premiere of his next film, Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan answers if he would like to return to direct a film within the superhero genre or participate as a director in any Star Wars project in the future.

Nolan was one of the great directors who brought Batman to the big screen in one of the most successful and acclaimed trilogies in the world of comics. Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises marked a before and after in the way the audience perceives the character, but also showed a new path for superhero movies.

The work done by Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne and the hero of Gotham City was memorable, and what Heath Ledger did with the Joker is considered one of the best performances in the genre in all of history. While Nolan’s way of portraying the adventures of the Caped Crusader are still considered by many as the best movies ever made within the genre.

Later, the director continued to be part of some other projects related to characters based on comic books as a producer on Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. However, he has not returned to direct any movie related to superheroes. And many fans wonder if he will ever do it again.

Christopher Nolan Answers Quickly When Asked If He Would Direct Another Superhero Movie

Warner Bros. Pictures

In a recent interview with HugoDecrypte on YouTube, the director offered an honest answer on whether he would join the superhero genre again to which he said “no”. But when asked if he would direct a Star Wars movie, he chose not to give a clear answer and said “pass”:

But it’s not just superhero movies or stories set in a galaxy far, far away that Nolan is staying away from. He recently confirmed that, until the strikes that have halted a large part of the Hollywood productions are not resolved, he will not start working on his next project.

However, while he may take a short break, Nolan isn’t planning on stepping away from the director chair anytime soon. Speaking to Reel Blend, the director shared his opinion on Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming retirement, and whether he plans to do the same:

“It’s addictive to tell stories in cinema. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s very fun. It’s something you feel driven to do, and so it’s a little hard to imagine voluntarily stopping. But I also see … Quentin’s point has always been that – and he never, very graciously, he’s never specific about the films he’s talking about or whatever – but he’s looking at some of the work done by filmmakers in later years and feeling that if it can’t live up to the heyday, it would be better if it didn’t exist. And I think that’s a very purest point of view. It’s the point of view of a cinephile who prizes film history.”
