Summary

  • Disney Publishing Worldwide’s Hyperion Avenue imprint will be releasing three new crime novels featuring Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Daredevil, continuing the darker storytelling of their comic book appearances.
  • The novels, aimed at mature audiences, will expand the Marvel Universe beyond the big screen and Disney+, showcasing the beloved superheroes in an exciting new light.

Fans of Netflix’s Marvel Defenders Universe have been continually speculating on if and when the likes of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage could be joining Charlie Cox’s Daredevil in the MCU. While actors Mike Colter and Krysten Ritter have continued to tease the possible return of Cage and Jones, it seems that the characters will be getting a new lease of live…in book form.

Disney Publishing Worldwide’s Hyperion Avenue imprint, who were founded with the express purpose of expanding many Disney-owned IPs into one areas, will be publishing three new novels aimed at mature audiences that will feature Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Matt Murdock/Daredevil in brand new stories that promise to continue the darker route of storytelling that their comic book appearances have always leant into. Publishers Weekly revealed that the launch of Marvel Crime will be the next big phase of projected to expand the Marvel Universe beyond the big screen and Disney+. A statement from Marvel’s vice president of publishing Sven Larsen read:

“We are always looking for new ways to tell stories about Marvel’s beloved superheroes, and working with Hyperion Avenue on the Marvel Crime novels will showcase these characters in an exciting new light. We know that lifelong Marvel fans and crime fiction enthusiasts alike will enjoy this inventive new series.”

The first of the new crime novels will feature Jessica Jones and is expected to be released in 2024. This will be followed by Luke Cage and Daredevil novels in 2025, which will probably end up coinciding with the new series of Daredevil: Born Again, which was originally planned to arrive in 2024 but will likely end up being delayed by the current strikes and realignment of Disney’s priorities with Marvel output.

Netflix

One of the most popular offshoots of Marvel comics has always been the Marvel Television shows that were made by Netflix before Disney claimed them for their own. The run of shows included Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and The Defenders. Alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones was always one of the most popular shows, and for that reason many fans really want to see Krysten Ritter returning to her superhero role in the MCU.

There has been plenty of speculation over whether Ritter will be returning to the franchise, with the actress occasionally seeming to tease her return herself via social media posts, but as of now, there has been no confirmation that she will show up for Daredevil: Born Again or another MCU show or movie. For the immediate future though, fans can look forward to a new Jessica Jones adventure in the new novel, and with Disney clearly still having the character in their thoughts, potentially this could be another indication that her return on-screen is only a matter of time.
