Cardinals not ready to name starting QB after releasing McCoy

The Arizona Cardinals released quarterback Colt McCoy, the team announced Monday.

Arizona will likely look toward Joshua Dobbs or rookie Clayton Tune to begin the season as its starter. However, head coach Jonathan Gannon refused to name his next QB1 on Monday, describing the decision as a “competitive advantage,” according to Paul Calvisi of 98.7 Arizona Sports. The Cardinals kick off their 2023 season on the road against the Washington Commanders on Sept. 10.

“We’ve got a plan in place, but I want to see them both play football still. … I feel good where we’re at,” the first-year head coach added, per PHNX Cardinals.

Kyler Murray is set to miss at least the first four games of the season after the team chose to keep him on the physically unable to perform list to begin the 2023 campaign, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. The 2019 first overall pick tore his ACL while scrambling last December in a game against the New England Patriots.

The Cardinals recently acquired Dobbs in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, while Tune was a fifth-round choice in the 2023 NFL Draft.

McCoy, 36, spent the past two seasons in Arizona, where he started six games and posted a 3-3 record as a starter. He passed for 780 yards and one touchdown with a 68.2% completion rate in 2022.

Prior to his tenure with the Cardinals, McCoy enjoyed stints with the Commanders, Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Giants.

The Texas product has racked up 7,975 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions, with a 79.9 career passer rating.
