Bears’ Fields doubtful vs. Raiders due to dislocated thumb

Quarterback Justin Fields is doubtful for the Chicago Bears’ matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders after suffering a dislocated right thumb, head coach Matt Eberflus said Monday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

No surgery is imminent for the Bears’ signal-caller, a source told Rapoport. The team is optimistic that rehab will improve his grip strength and get him back on the field when possible.

Eberflus said that the team will have a better idea of Fields’ availability later on in the week along with a timetable for his return.

Fields exited Sunday’s game after being sacked by Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter in the third quarter. He did not return for the remainder of the contest.

Fields completed six of 10 passes for 58 yards and one interception prior to leaving the game. Tyson Bagent passed for 83 yards, one interception, and rushed for one touchdown after replacing him.

Bagent joined Chicago as an undrafted free agent this past spring. He secured the backup job after leaping over Nathan Peterman on the depth chart. It’s unclear who the Bears will opt to line up under center for their matchup against the Raiders.

The 24-year-old Fields has led the Bears to a 1-5 record in his third campaign. He has thrown for 1,201 yards, 11 touchdowns, and six interceptions with a 61.7% completion rate. The Ohio State product has also rushed for 237 yards and a score.
