Although its story didn’t have that much of a connection with the rest of the MCU, since it presented alternative realities with unconventional versions of the franchise’s characters, What If…? helped to introduce the idea of the multiverse and to explain to the audience how it works, with some of the characters that appeared in its first season later getting their live-action treatment such as the zombie Doctor Strange or Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Now that the idea of the multiverse is already established and productions like Loki constantly explore it, What If…? will continue to present unexpected stories with its second season, which will premiere during the Holidays, as Disney+ recently confirmed.

What to Expect from What If…? Season Two

Marvel Studios

It is expected that the new season of What If…? will have 9 episodes like the inaugral season, again exploring different alternative scenarios within the MCU, but which at the same time can be canon within the multiverse. Check out the official synopsis for the second season of What If…?:

The Watcher continues the journey as our guide through the vast multiverse, introducing brand-new and familiar faces throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The animated anthology series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles.

In the first season of the animated show, Marvel Studios presented 9 stories. The first episode focused on Peggy Carter and what would have happened if she had become the First Avenger instead of Steve Rogers. In the second episode, T’Challa, instead of becoming Black Panther, takes on the role of Star-Lord. The third episode shows how the Avengers initiative fails to prosper as the original members of the team begin to die one by one before forming the group of heroes. In the fourth episode, an alternate Doctor Strange story is told, where he loses Christine in the famous accident.

The fifth episode is one of the most remembered, as it shows a world where the characters become zombies. In the sixth episode, Killmonger becomes a great hero after rescuing Tony Stark. While in the seventh episode, Thor’s life is very different since he is an only child. In the eighth one, a reality is presented in which Ultron defeated the Avengers, and in the ninth episode The Watcher recruits some of the alternative heroes from the previous episodes to face Ultron.
