Suicide Squad’s David Ayer Explains Joker’s “Intense” Differences in his Director’s Cut

Summary

  • David Ayer shared details of Jared Leto’s Joker from his original cut of Suicide Squad.
  • The Suicide Squad in 2021 marked a departure from Ayer’s dark tone after Warner Bros. intervened.
  • James Gunn excludes Suicide Squad 3 from his DCU vision, focusing on Peacemaker and the Viola Davis-led Waller series as well as his DCU story.

David Ayer, has teased fans many times with his “Ayer Cut” of 2016’s Suicide Squad, and he is doing it again. In a new social media post, the director shared details about what he sees as the main difference between the Joker in the studio cut of the movie, and the one he originally intended. According to his post on X (formerly Twitter), Ayer noted that his plan was to have the Joker as a much more “intense” character, and not a “prop” as he became in the theatrical release.

The director behind the original big screen outing for DC’s Suicide Squad, has previously expressed his regret regarding a creative choice he made concerning The Joker’s visual portrayal. On his X account, Ayer directly addressed criticisms by taking full ownership of the tattoo located on The Joker’s forehead, acknowledging it as his own conceptual creation. He also revealed that the original vision for the tattoo involved the word “Blessed,” a departure from the divisive “Damaged” that ultimately made its way onto the screen. He wrote:

“I own the tattoo idea 100%. It was my choice. Original idea is it would say ‘Blessed’ and not ‘Damaged.’ Now having said that — I regret that decision. It created acrimony and division. Not every idea is a good idea. And I’ll just be in the corner here while the internet slaps me around for this post.”

The release of The Suicide Squad in 2021, directed by James Gunn, marked a significant departure from the tone established by Ayer’s film. The new installment brought a refreshing shift in ambiance, moving away from the darker elements that characterized the original movie. This transformation in tone was attributed in part to Warner Bros.’ involvement, as they intervened after the release of Batman v. Superman to orchestrate a comprehensive re-edit of the 2016 Suicide Squad film.

James Gunn Excludes Suicide Squad 3 from His DCU Vision

In light of recent developments, it’s become clear that James Gunn has mapped out an ambitious trajectory for the DC Universe that excludes the prospect of a Suicide Squad 3. This revelation came to light during an interview between Gunn and Michael Rosenbaum on Inside of You. Instead, Gunn’s energy and creativity are channeled towards his involvement in the second season of Peacemaker and the Viola Davis-led Waller series.

“Yeah, we’ve talked about it, but the honest truth is, I just have so many hours in a day to work on stuff. And I had such a fun time working in television that I really think that’s what I’m going to spend the next year of my life doing”.

Following Gunn and Safran’s leadership roles within the DC Universe, a call emerged for the release of David Ayer’s initial cut of Suicide Squad, drawing a parallel to the triumphant grassroots campaign that resulted in the Snyder Cut of Justice League being unveiled. Nonetheless, the likelihood of the Ayer Cut being officially released remains uncertain, primarily due to ongoing debates about the existence of a viable version and amplified by Warner Bros.’ financial deliberations concerning allocating further resources to the endeavor.

In spite of these challenges, David Ayer previously reignited a glimmer of hope through a tweet. “All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release.” Ayer wrote. “The interest in my cut being [shown] seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have [its] time to be shared.” Based on these remarks, and others, it seems that the Ayer Cut will be released at some point in the future, and it is just a case of when rather than if.
