Better Call Saul Fans Call Out Emmys’ for Not Giving Bob Odenkirk “His Flowers”

Summary

  • Better Call Saul, despite earning 53 nominations throughout its run, secured zero wins at the Emmy Awards, making it the most snubbed series ever.
  • Fans expressed their disappointment on social media, specifically highlighting Bob Odenkirk’s brilliance and dedication to the role, especially after suffering a major heart attack during filming.
  • Many fans emphasized that awards don’t determine a show’s greatness, praising the entire crew and the impact and quality of Better Call Saul beyond accolades.

While Succession, The Bear, and Beef dominated Monday night’s 75th Emmy Awards, other fan-favorite series, including Yellowjackets, Ted Lasso, and Better Call Saul concluded the night completely winless. For the latter, unfortunately, this meant Emmy Awards night ended exactly the same as previous years. After earning 53 nominations throughout its critically lauded six-season run, Better Call Saul secured zero wins, breaking an Emmy record and becoming the most snubbed series ever.

For its last season, which concluded in 2022, Better Call Saul racked up seven Emmy nods, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (for Bob Odenkirk), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (for Rhea Seehorn), and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series (for two separate episodes). While White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge received the Supporting Actress Award, the other three categories were overtaken by Succession (Kieran Culkin earned the Lead Actor statuette).

Fans of the series were not happy following last night’s Emmys and took to social media to express their disappointment with the Television Academy for not acknowledging the talented team behind Better Call Saul. Many highlighted Odenkirk’s brilliance and dedication (the actor suffered a major heart attack while filming the final season, returning just five weeks later to wrap filming):

Some noted that awards didn’t dictate a show’s greatness:

Many other fans of the series praised the entire crew, praising the writers and the rest of the show’s cast:

Netflix

Better Call Saul, created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, premiered in 2015 as a prequel to Breaking Bad. The series centers on Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman, a former con-man turned underhanded attorney involved in shady dealings in Albuquerque. Despite never winning an Emmy Award, the drama has earned seven Critics’ Choice Awards, along with numerous other accolades.

Alongside Odenkirk and Seehorn, Better Call Saul starred Jonathan Banks, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando, Tony Dalton, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Odenkirk last appeared in a guest starring role in The Bear and lead the AMC series Lucky Hank. Despite earning critical praise, Lucky Hank was canceled after just one season due to poor viewership numbers. That marked the conclusion of a 14-year run on AMC for the actor (which began with his portrayal of Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad in 2009). Odenkirk has several projects lined up, including The Room Returns, a remake of Tommy Wiseau’s cult classic The Room, and a sequel to his 2021 film Nobody.

Following the conclusion of Better Call Saul, Seehorn has voiced characters in Monster High and Invincible, and starred in Cooper’s Bar, which earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. She’s set to appear in the fourth, and still untitled, Bad Boys film.

Better Call Saul is available to stream on Netflix.
