‘Maybe We Should Do That’

‘Maybe We Should Do That’

Summary

  • Saoirse Ronan expresses interest in a Lady Bird sequel, saying she would do anything with Greta Gerwig till the end of time.
  • The original Lady Bird film received critical acclaim and garnered six Academy Award nominations.
  • Gerwig and Ronan have worked together on multiple projects and expressed a desire to continue collaborating in the future.

Before there was Barbie, there was Lady Bird. Set in 2002, Greta Gerwig’s Academy Award-nominated 2017 film starred Saoirse Ronan as an artistically inclined 17-year-old-girl navigating high school and her often tumultuous relationship with her mother. During its final moments, audiences see Ronan’s character Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson in a new city, having achieved her goal of leaving her small town. Lady Bird’s post-high school life, and her relationship with her mother, could easily be expanded on in a follow-up film, and Ronan says she would be up for the ride.

During a recent conversation with ScreenRant at the Sundance Film Festival, where Ronan’s latest project The Outrun premiered last week, the actress discussed returning for a Lady Bird sequel following reports that Gerwig may be interested in revisiting the character’s story:

“Did she say that? Did she actually say that? Maybe we should do that. I feel like actually we have always talked about that. Yeah of course I would. I would do everything with her till the end of time.”

The A24 film, which co-starred Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Lois Smith, impressed critics and audiences. Gerwig and Ronan would go on to collaborate on 2019’s Little Women, with Ronan starring as Jo March, and Gerwig writing and helming the film. Little Women garnered six Academy Award nominations (including a Best Actress nod for Ronan).

In an interview following the film’s release, Gerwig told Ronan that she hoped they got “to be old ladies together making movies about old ladies,” so it could be a while before we see Lady Bird 2…

Saoirse Ronan Almost Starred as Another ‘Weird Barbie’

Warner Bros.

While a third collaboration between the two is yet to come to fruition, Ronan recently opened up about Gerwig approaching her for a cameo appearance in Barbie (her Lady Bird co-star Timothée Chalamet was also approached to appear). She told Variety:

“I don’t know what he was going to be, but I was definitely going to be a Weird Barbie. I don’t know how to take that. I would have been with Kate McKinnon, so that would have been nice. I had a scene but didn’t ever get to do it, and it wasn’t in the movie.”

“I think I’d be the strange girl who talked to herself and always had her pet dog with her and always talked to the dog and wouldn’t look at anyone.

Ronan currently stars in The Outrun. Adapted from Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir of the same name, the film centers on Rona, a recovering addict attempting to come to terms with her troubled past. She returns to the wild beauty of Scotland’s Orkney Islands (where she grew up) hoping to heal. Ronan has amassed praise for her portrayal in the film, with some critics naming her as a contender for next year’s Best Actress Oscars race.

Gerwig recently made history for her billion dollar grossing Barbie; the film has gained several Oscar nods including acting nominations for Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, and Margot Robbie. Up next, Gerwig is set write and direct two film adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix.
