The highly anticipated second season of Squid Game has finally been given a release date…or a release window, at least. The sophomore season of Squid Game is now due to land on Netflix later this year, with Variety revealing details of a letter that was sent to shareholders by the streaming platform. The letter details Netflix’s “big, bold slate” for 2024, which includes the release of Squid Game season two, Bridgerton season three, and the live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

You can see what the letter said of the 2024 Netflix slate below.

“Looking ahead, despite last year’s strikes pushing back the launch of some titles, we have a big, bold slate for 2024. Audiences will be able to choose from hit returning dramas like ‘The Diplomat’ S2, ‘Bridgerton’ S3, ‘Squid Game’ S2 and ‘Empress’ S2; unscripted series like ‘Tour de France: Unchained’ S2,’ Love is Blind’ S6, ‘F1: Drive to Survive’ S6 and ‘Full Swing’ S2; and brand new shows like ‘3 Body Problem’ (based on the best selling novel and from the ‘Game of Thrones’ showrunners), ‘Griselda’ (starring Sofia Vegara, which premieres this week), ‘The Gentlemen’ (from Guy Ritchie), ‘Eric’ (starring Benedict Cumberbach), ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, ‘Cien Años de Soledad,’ from Colombia based on the novel by Gabriel García Márquez and Senna from Brazil.”

Released back in September 2021 to widespread critical acclaim, the first season of Squid Game centers on a contest in which 456 players, drawn from different walks of life but each deeply in debt, play a set of children’s games with deadly consequences in the hopes of winning a 45.6 billion Won prize.

Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk (who fruitlessly shopped the project around to different studios for years), and starring Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung, Squid Game quickly became a pop culture phenomenon. The series went on to receive several award nominations, including 14 nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Ending with a tease of things to come, as main character Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) turns away from the plane that will take him back to his family and instead decides to put an end to the Squid Game, audiences have been waiting for the return of the series for what feels like forever. Well, mercifully, we now know we won’t have to wait much longer.

While plot details for Squid Game season two remain largely unknown, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has offered some idea regarding how the show and Gi-hun will evolve.

“I mean the biggest change will be the change of [Lee Jung-jae’s] character. Because he’s a different guy in season 2. You know he turned his hair color to red and he became like something more like, serious, more like going for revenge so his character will be totally different.”

Squid Game season two will also center on the mysterious The Front Man, played in the first series by I Saw the Devil star Lee Byung-hun, as well as tackling more social issues, this time taking aim at the police.

The first season of Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix, with the show expanding into reality TV with Squid Game: The Challenge, which was recently renewed for a second season.
