Is Josh Brolin in the Movie?

Summary

  • Josh Brolin teases fans with a mysterious “maybe” response after declaring he is
    NOT
    in
    Deadpool & Wolverine.
  • Since the third
    Deadpool
film exists in the MCU, Brolin could appear as Cable and/or Thanos in the highly anticipated sequel.
  • Brolin praises the Russo Brothers for their direction in shaping his performance as Thanos in
    Avengers: Infinity War
    and
    Avengers: Endgame.

Theoretically, Josh Brolin could show up in Deadpool & Wolverine as Cable and/or Thanos. Now that the merc with a mouth is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his third big-screen adventure, that technically opens the door for either one of Brolin’s antagonistic characters to walk through into the film. Sadly, Brolin won’t be returning… probably. Brolin was asked the following question by Steve Weintraub in an exclusive interview with Collider:

I have to start with this one. Are you in Deadpool 3, and if not, why?

Brolin responded:

No. I don’t know. Because Ryan [Reynolds] doesn’t like me? I don’t know… I don’t know.

Then, after a fleeting moment, Brolin boldly stares into the camera and has to go and seemingly undo everything. Brolin says:

Does that mean Brolin might actually be in the movie? Is the actor just messing with everyone? Or is he trying to keep his involvement in Deadpool & Wolverine under wraps, so MCU diehards will be surprised this summer? Who knows? But hopefully, if either Cable or Thanos shows up in the third Deadpool film, it will be a better kept secret than how most of the Illuminati were spoiled before the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Josh Brolin’s Marvelous Legacy

Walt Disney Studios

Josh Brolin had the fortune of portraying two larger-than-life characters right out of the pages of Marvel Comics: the time-traveling Mutant, Cable and the Infinity Gauntlet-wielding Thanos. And while Thanos was certainly the more dangerous of the two antagonists, Brolin revealed that it was actually much harder to bring Cable to life on the big screen in Deadpool 2. Brolin said during the Team Deakins podcast:

Deadpool was hard. Even though it was funny, it was harder. That was more of a business transaction. It was more, ‘We need to make this like this.’ Whereas, I didn’t feel that way with Avengers.

Brolin portrayed the villainous Thanos in both Avengers: Infinity War and the record-setting Avengers: Endgame, while he only appeared as Cable in the sequel to Deadpool. And when it came to portraying the Infinity Stone-obsessed destroyer of half the universe, the actor loved the process of bringing such a misguided murderer to life on the Silver Screen. Brolin also said during the podcast:

The level of conviction needed, which is what I loved about that process… if I can have focus during this process I can do anything. It was actually great.

Brolin also credited the Russo Brothers (Anthony and Joe) with helping to sculpt his performance of Thanos, and keep the portrayl grounded, for the two multi-million-dollar movies. Brolin said in the same interview:

They would constantly go back and reference Scarface or Dog Day Afternoon. Whether or not it was a manipulation, they knew what to throw out there to bring it back into something inspired.

Brolin returns to the big screen in
Dune: Part Two
on March 1. Meanwhile,
Deadpool & Wolverine
begins its theatrical run on July 26. And fans can check out Brolin’s most recent interview with Collider in its entirety below:
