Norman Reedus Reveals Where The Boondock Saints 3 Will Pick Up the Series

Summary

  • Norman Reedus reveals
    The Boondock Saints 3
will start with a wild prison break, promising an action-packed opening sequence.
  • Despite rocky beginnings, the original cult classic has evolved into a fan-favorite franchise with a strong following over the years.
  • The new movie, produced by Thunder Road, is said to focus on new “Saints” and may feature return appearances from familiar faces like Willem Dafoe.

The Boondock Saints will be returning for a third chapter in their storied history, and star Norman Reedus has revealed when The Boondock Saints 3 will pick up the story following the events in the 2009 sequel. Released on January 21, 2000, The Boondock Saints became a commercial flop after being shown in just five theaters thanks to distribution issues, and earning $35,000. The film would find new life on home video, earning more than $50 million in sales over the years, leading to The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day in 2009. Like its predecessor, it was also considered a box office failure thanks to its limited release, but gained traction on home video, and over the years the two films have earned a cult following, with many die-hard fans clamoring for a sequel.

In an interview with ScreenRant to promote his latest film, The Bikeriders, Norman Reedus discussed where The Boondock Saints 3 will pick up in the story, which saw the MacManus brothers behind bars at the end of All Saints Day. You can’t keep the Irish twins down though, as according to Reedus, the film will open with an action-packed prison break which he describes as “crazy.” Check out his comments below.

“It’s happening. There’s sort of a rough outline of a script. The opening sequence, I think they’re keeping from that rough outline because it’s crazy.
It’s crazy. It’s basically the boys breaking out of prison
. That’s how it starts.”

While The Boondock Saints 3 was first announced in 2021 with original director Troy Duffy expected to return, the project underwent a number of changes in the last three years, and has since ended up in the hands of Thunder Road, the production company behind the John Wick franchise. They’ll join rights-holders Dragonfly Films in producing the new entry, which is being called an “expansion” of the series. Duffy will remain involved as a producer.

What Will The Boondock Saints 3 Be About?

While plot details for The Boondock Saints 3 are under wraps for now as the movie currently appears to still be in the early stages of script development, the new film is said to focus on the “indoctrination of new ‘Saints.’” Whether they will aid in the aforementioned prison break remains to be seen, but what is confirmed is that both Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery will return to reprise their roles of Murphy and Connor MacManus respectively.

As for who else could pop up in the story? There is a chance fans could see Willem Dafoe return as FBI Special Agent Paul Smecker, who was revealed to still be alive at the end of All Saints Day, and helping the MacManus twins all along. Julie Benz could also pop up as FBI Special Agent Eunice Bloom, but as of now, that is just speculation. For the time being, Reedus and Flanery are the only confirmed cast members to return to the franchise at this point.

Crime-stopping and revenge-seeking vigilantes aren’t limited to superheroes, as these great movies show.

With the vigilante subgenre being a hot commodity right now thanks to the likes of the John Wick franchise, and another Thunder Roads production, Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, the makers of The Boondock Saints 3 would do well to strike while the iron is hot, so that audiences can once again see their favorite Irish twins dish out their own brand of justice.
