  • Netflix disappoints by canceling completed project

  • Expensive fantasy projects often lead streamers such as Netflix to shelve shows without warning
  • Streaming giants like Netflix have a track record of canceling shows with loyal fanbases, causing frustration among paying subscribers.

Netflix’s growing notoriety for canceling completed projects continues to confound subscribers as the urban fantasy drama The Grimm Reality has been shelved by the streamer despite completing filming back in 2022. According to Deadline, the German-language series, which is believed to being the work of the Brothers Grimm into a “fairy tale urban fantasy” world, comes from Wiedemann & Berg, known for their work on Dark, but it seems that the lights have gone out on their latest venture with the streamer.

Modern-day fairy tales can be adapted to all sorts of genres, from teenage romantic comedies to outright horror films.

The Grimm Reality has had very little detail revealed, which seems to have made it easier for Netflix to bury the series in a shallow, early grave. The premise of the series is thought to have taken several prominent Grimm stories and combined them into a modern urban setting. While this has not been confirmed outside “insider” knowledge, the title does suggest that the series would have taken place in a world with a strong connection to the works of the storytelling brothers.

Series creators Till Kleinert, known for Der Samurai, and Erol Yesilkaya from Dog Haus, would have been leading the show, which features the acting talents of Hyuan Wanner, Patrick Isermeyer, Eidin Jalali, and Dennis Schuermann. The unceremonious cancellation has not gone down particularly well with the German arm of Netflix’s operation, and so far there have been no clarifying comments made by any party involved in the project.

Netflix Have Shelved Many Projects, Even Those Completed

Netflix

The shelving of The Grimm Reality marks a significant yet not uncommon pitfall of the streaming world. Netflix in particular have been constantly under attack from fans for canceling shows that have a very passionate and dedicated fanbases – just not one that is big enough for the streamer to pump money into them.

This is particularly true of fantasy projects, which come with a higher budget and longer production schedule thanks to a combination of practical and CGI effects being employed to bring incredible worlds and peoples to life on screen. A world incorporating the stories of the Brothers Grimm would no doubt have involved some expensive effects work, and that could partly be why Netflix have decided not to move ahead with the project despite it being complete.

Here are all the Netflix movies that had their releases canceled after going into production.

In the last few years, Netflix has canceled a number of high profile shows that just aren’t making up the numbers for them, such as Warrior Nun and Cowboy Bebop, but has also bought into several other series that have been dropped from other networks and platforms. It is a Ying/Yang seesaw of wins and losses that can never completely please everyone, but the cancelation of a series that has not even had the chance to build itself an audience is just the kind of thing that really grinds on the people paying the subscription fee.
