The death of Ray Stevenson
in 2023 created one of those terrible dilemmas for Star Wars series Ahsoka
, as the actor’s powerful performance as Baylan Skoll was one that became a huge part of the Disney+ series’ success. There seemed to be no question that the character would need to be recast, and finally the answer about who will be stepping into those mighty shoes has been revealed. As per The Hollywood Reporter, who confirmed a slightly earlier rumor by journalist Jeff Sneider, Game of Thrones star Rory McCann
will be swapping the sword of The Hound for the lightsaber of Skoll.
Information about Season 2 of Ahsoka has been very slow in coming from Disney and Lucasfilm. With several other Star Wars shows failing to be granted a second season, the time between the 2023 release of Season 1 and lack of movement on Season 2 made many fans wonder if it could be next for the chop. However, recent interviews with the likes of Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy revealed that Ahsoka Season 2 was not about to disappear into a black hole.
While there has been no confirmation when shooting will begin for the new season, there have been several indications that it could be April this year, although Filoni said late in 2024 that the scripts were still being worked on. With a number of recent Star Wars shows being majorly disappointing – Ahsoka itself only just scraped a “fresh” audience score of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes – there is probably a lot of focus being put on ensuring that the return of the series is one that does not crash the spaceship.
Replacing Ray Stevenson Is Going to Be Challenging
There are some characters that fans take to their hearts, even when they are the bad guy. Along with Rosario Dawson’s flawless performance in the titular role, Stevenson’s Baylon Skoll was singled out as the best thing about the first season, which otherwise fell into the same complaints about a boring story, bad dialogue and the other gripes that have almost become tropes of the Star Wars franchise themselves.
For this reason, finding someone to replace Stevenson in the central role was going to be tough, but McCann proved himself in a very similar role to Stevenson when playing The Hound in Game of Thrones. One of the many initially antagonistic characters in the series, The Hound – aka Sandor Clegane – grew from being a potentially brutal and fierce opposition to characters such as the Starks, to a compassionate, honorable figure that endeared himself to audiences, mainly through his interactions with Arya Stark.

‘Ahsoka’s journey is reportedly set to end with the second season of her solo series.
Fans came to love the character in much the same way as audiences took to Skoll, which seems to set McCann up as the perfect replacement for Stevenson in the coming series. Whether he can handle a lightsaber as well as a sword, and can continue the character’s legacy in a way that is accepted by fans will be seen when the series finally airs. However, with no real idea of when that will be, there is probably going to be quite a wait to discover who it all turns out.
