James Wan-Produced ‘Teacup’ Canceled Despite Strong Rotten Tomatoes Reviews

Horror series are one of the hardest to bring to the screen in any meaningful and long-lasting way, and this has been proven again as the Ian McCulloch and James Wan produced Teacup
has been canceled by Peacock
after a single season. Despite gaining a lot of positive reviews and a growing dedicated fanbase, the viewing figures were apparently not up to scratch for Peacock – which was possibly telling considering the show never graced the Top 10 of the streaming charts.

The series, based on the novel Stinger by Robert McCammon, was developed for Peacock by showrunner McCulloch and Wan’s Atomic Monster production company. The synopsis of the show reads, “A disparate group of people in rural Georgia must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive.” With a cast including The Handmaid’s Tale star Yvonne Strahov and Grey’s Anatomy’s Scott Speedman, the show seemed to have all the credentials to be a success, and that appeared to be confirmed when the show made its debut in October 2024.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series consensus says, “Stylish and genuinely scary, Teacup’s human drama has some spillage but the atmospheric frights of this horror series leave a pleasing aftertaste.” That was all reflected in the 77% Tomatometer score and a similar 70% Popcornmeter score. At a time when most movies and TV show fail to unite critics and audiences, the strong dual result has made the cancelation even harder to take for fans.

‘Teacup’ Opened Strong, Leaving Many Hoping for Season 2

While Teacup did not please everyone, and there were those who felt it simply confirmed once again that there are no new ideas in Hollywood, the vast majority liked what they saw enough to want the series to return for a second season. Some audience reviews called it “moody and creepy,” while others said it was “not perfect but entertaining to watch.” It seems though that not enough people decided to do just that, leading to the show taking a fatal blow on the chopping block.

Among the fans of the show was none other than horror master Stephen King, who heaped praise on the series ahead of its debut. Sharing his thoughts on his X/Twitter account, King wrote at the time:

“TEACUP: If you like FROM or LOST, I think you’ll enjoy this. It’s strange, creepy, claustrophobic, and scary. Beware the Gas Mask Man. Short episodes. All killer, no filler. (Peacock–bows October 10th)”

Showrunner Ian McCulloch discusses Teacup, his spooky new series that comes to Peacock on Oct. 10, 2024.

While King’s words are his power – as was professed on the cover of many of his books – in this instance, even a positive push in the right direction from the author wasn’t enough to get more people interested in the series. Perhaps it was the lack of real marketing, or just the simple fact that, despite being back in fashion, the horror genre will always be the underdog, but when all was said and done, Teacup was seen as being half empty rather than half full in the eyes of Peacock’s decision makers. For now, the first, and only, season is available to stream on the platform.

Teacup is a horror thriller series that follows a group of people thrust into the middle of rural Georgia who must face off with an unknown threat to stay alive.
