Disney+ Password Sharing Measure Glitch Slammed by Subscribers

Disney+ Password Sharing Measure Glitch Slammed by Subscribers

Like many streamers, Disney+

invoked a clampdown on password sharing in 2024, meaning that subscribers could only watch their favorite shows and movies in the comfort of their own home, or in another location on a limited number of occasions via the “Away” exception. However, it seems that this has been causing a huge headache for some subscribers, with a glitch in the system disrupting the viewing experience of users by telling them they are “Away” from home when they are not.

Naturally, it does not take long for this kind of complaint to take on a life of its own, and with some users reporting that they have even been logged out of their account despite being connected to their home internet hub, the usual cries of imminent cancelation have been heard from disgruntled subscribers who have demanded something be done about the bug.

HBO Boss has unveiled plans for Max password sharing crackdown and new price increases coming next year.

For most users, the issue has not arisen, but for others it has become a problem worthy of airing on Reddit’s Disney+ page. The problem reportedly sees users receiving an on-screen message telling them, “You’ve used all your ‘I’m Away’ requests.” The “I’m Away” feature allows subscribers the option of logging into their account a limited number of times while away from home, but according to complaints aired on Reddit, the error is also happening while users are watching in their own household. Additionally, those moving home have also discovered the prevention method an issue. As one user wrote:

“I moved house 4 months ago and 2-3 times I week I get these messages. I keep clicking update household, and when that stops working, I use the I’m away, and when that stops working I have to contact Disney+ and they fix the problem, only for it to reappear again and I feel like I am caught in a loop. Three times I have had to go to Disney Support, and each time they claim it wont happen again but it always does.”

Obviously, this kind of issue brings with it a lot of frustration for those impacted, and the common response is to demand something be done to rectify the situation or cancelation requests will follow. So far, there seems to be no reason given by Disney as to why the error is occurring, and although a group of tech-savvy employees are squirreling away to find a solution, that does not appease those constantly being logged out of their accounts.

Password Sharing Crack-Downs Became Common in 2024

Password sharing clampdowns were rolled out across many streaming platforms last year, with several major streamers bringing in measures to prevent people watching content via one account unless they live in the same household. Despite plenty of complaints before the changes came into effect, Netflix in particular announced as part of its quarterly earnings calls that subscriber numbers had massively increased as a result.

This does not mean that everyone was happy with the situation, as families disagreed with not being able to watch a service they were paying for if they were away from home, particularly those with young children that wanted to watch their favorite shows and movies. For this reason, some streamers still allow users to watch content on a limited basis as long as they stream via their registered home internet network within a certain timeframe.

Like anything based in technology, glitches are not uncommon, and this is just the latest issue to be aired online by those affected. Even without the bug, there are still some who are unsatisfied with the measures taken by Disney to stop streaming outside the home. As one put it:

“I find it really annoying when Disney Plus is somewhat geared towards families. We run into this issue when the kids are at Grandmas and want to watch their favorite shows.”

These complaints may resonate with large groups of people, but in the end, password sharing prevention measures are not about to be lifted by any streamer. From their standpoint, if you want to watch, you abide by their rules. Not the best way to please consumers according to some, but subscriber numbers are certainly not on the decline, suggesting that this issue is not about to cause too many sleepless nights for those counting the profits.
