Dead City’ Returns in May With Season 2 Premiere Date

Since its television debut in 2010, fans have never been able to get enough of The Walking Dead universe. The flagship series lasted for 11 seasons and gave birth to several spin-offs, including Dead City, which serves as a direct sequel to the main saga. Premiering in 2023, fans were reunited with Maggie (Lauren Cohen) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they navigated a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, and now they’re back for a second season, which officially returns to AMC on May 4, 2025.

The news came yesterday during IGN Fan Fest, and on hand to discuss the upcoming season were Morgan and Cohen – who also serve as executive producers – and Scott Gimple, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead universe at AMC. While Season 1 of Dead City had a clear antagonist by way of Željko Ivanek as The Croat, that isn’t the case in Season 2, which Gimple said has a lot going on in it.

“I think there is no single big bad. There’s a lot of shifting as far as the power rankings this season. It isn’t all antagonistic. It’s a little more complex like that. It’s a little more political, and things get kind of physical. You have characters – actors like Kim Coates – who is a character. I don’t know, is he a hero? Villain? Jester? I have no idea sometimes. I arrived on set, he took me by the arm, and I had one of the most surreal conversations in the world. The dude is an entertainer, and I can’t wait for people to see how he interacts with these characters we have in front of us.”

That tracks with what Coates told MovieWeb earlier this year about The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2, which he said has “three or four gangs” in it, with his character of Bruegel being “the biggest gang member of my squad.” “It’s a character I’ve never played before,” he added. “He’s funny and vicious, and he’s a baby. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Maggie and Negan Are in Tough Spots When ‘Dead City’ Season 2 Begins

When Dead City Season 1 came to a conclusion in July 2023, Maggie had traded Negan for the return of her son, Herschel. Now in the hands of The Croat and The Dama, Morgan said it’s not a position his character is used to being in. However, with Negan being Negan, he’s definitely not going to submit to anyone willingly. “We find Negan very much under the thumb of The Dama and The Croat, and on some ground he’s not real familiar with,” Morgan told IGN, adding:

“He’s going to try to flip that script, of course. But he’s in a place that I don’t think he’s enjoying very much. At the beginning of the season we find him having a hard time with all of it. He’s always scheming and trying to figure out how he can get on top of the situation, but he finds himself in a hard spot.”

As for Maggie? “Sadly, not everything is quite as rosy as it could be or seems or one would hope,” Cohen said in terms of where her mental health is at as Dead City Season 2 kicks off. Can you blame her? She has two teenagers to care for during the apocalypse, and, as she puts it: “There are very relatable domestic dynamics that are playing out as we come back in Season 2.”
