10 Least Likeable Characters in ‘The White Lotus’ Ranked

10 Least Likeable Characters in ‘The White Lotus’ Ranked

HBO’s biting dark comedy The White Lotus has become a cultural phenomenon. The hit anthology series takes place at one of the White Lotus resorts and follows a different group of wealthy people as they stay at the luxurious locale and unleash their worst impulses. Season 1 was set in Maui, Season 2 took audiences to picturesque Sicily, and the current third season takes place in Thailand. A death at the hotel marks the beginning of each season, and the story then travels back in time to depict the events leading to the tragedy.

The Emmy-winning show expertly satirizes the privileged, capturing the delusion and lack of self-awareness held by insufferable elitists. One of the show’s most fascinating aspects is that it serves as a compelling character study. Viewers are introduced to deeply flawed, complex, and nuanced personalities that both shock and hilariously entertain. Mike White’s characters are awful, but they’re extremely fun to hate. From despicable to diabolical, here’s how the worst of them stack up.

10

Olivia Mossbacher

Season 1

Sydney Sweeney’s character is the most subtly menacing personality of the series. Olivia is the daughter of a powerhouse search engine CEO (Connie Britton as Nicole). The college sophomore travels to the Hawaiian resort with her obscenely rich family, with her best friend Paula (Brittany O’ Grady) in tow. She spends her time bullying her younger brother Quinn (Fred Hechinger), getting high with her gal pal, and ripping into her parents for their privileged views and lack of self-awareness. However, not all is at seems.

Performative Woke Gen Z-er

Beneath Olivia’s purported compassion for social issues and marginalized groups, she’s more like her family than she cares to admit. Olivia treats her Black friend as just another accessory to tote around. Her friendship with Paula is a cover—a way to define herself in complete opposition to her mother, whose ilk she claims to despise.

In reality, she doesn’t see Paula as a person, but rather views her in terms of color and of lower class. Paula is property to her. In order to maintain power, Olivia goes as far as sabotaging Paula’s romances. Not turning Paula in for the heist wasn’t done out of compassion, but as a way to maintain the upper hand and keep her veneer intact.

9

Kitty Patton

Season 1

Although her character only appears in a couple of episodes, Saturday Night Live alumna Molly Shannon steals the show in her limited scenes. Much to her daughter-in-law’s dismay (Alexandra Daddario as Rachel), Kitty unexpectedly crashes her son’s (Jake Lacy as Shane) honeymoon, exacerbating the Pineapple Suite debacle upon arrival. When the couple finally gets the infamous room, she’s unimpressed with the “very pineapple-y” suite, but all is well now that momma’s boy has got his way.

It Runs in the Family

Her appearance shows that the apple didn’t fall from the tree (but more on Shane later). Kitty may not be intentionally cruel or evil, but she possesses all the worst qualities of the elite, many of which are shared by the monster she raised. Her entitlement and lack of boundaries are nearly psychopathic. Kitty has no filter, as is evident when she diminishes Rachel and encourages her to be happy being a mere trophy wife. Kitty is so well-off that it’s incomprehensible to her why anyone would value working without having the need to.

8

Kate

Season 3

Kate (played by Leslie Bibb) is part of a trio of childhood best friends, which also includes Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) and Laurie (Carrie Coon). On a trip they deem as their “victory tour,” the gal pals travel to Thailand’s White Lotus to reconnect and celebrate their successes. Tensions between them build on the very first night, with Jaclyn and Kate delivering backhanded compliments to Laurie and then trash-talking her when she goes to bed. In the second episode, titled “Special Treatments,” Laurie and Kate have a solo conversation, in which they go in on Jaclyn.

The Instigator

While all three women are hella toxic and have unpleasant qualities, it’s the woman with the blond bob that gives “I want to speak to the manager” vibes who loves to stir the pot. She sides with whoever she’s speaking to at the moment. The wine-guzzling WASP takes note of every look, sideways glance, and passive-aggressive comment. Not only does she feed into it, but she makes sure the other two do, as well. It’s going to be marvelously entertaining to watch the toxic friend group fall apart and show how they really feel about each other.

A new season, a new mystery. Here’s who we think ‘The White Lotus’ season 3’s death will be.

7

Bert Di Grasso

Season 2

F. Murray Abraham’s Bert travels to the beautiful town of Taormina on the coast of Sicily with his son Dominic (Michael Imperioli) and grandson Albie (Adam DiMarco). The three generations of men mean to explore their heritage and roots while on vacation. The show doesn’t waste time showing that beneath his comical, fun-loving personality is a creepy old man no woman would feel comfortable being alone in a room with.

Toxic Masculinity

When Bert reminisces about “the good old days,” he’s really longing for a time when men could get away with whatever they pleased and the subjugation of women ran rampant. Without shame, Bert acts predatory towards women, accosting female staff and ogling beautiful members of the opposite sex. Throughout the course of the season, audiences learn that he cheated on his late wife, inflicting great pain on his family. Decades later, Bert remains oblivious to that damage. Instead of encouraging Dominic to learn from his mistakes, he tries teaching him a lesson about avoiding getting caught.

6

Dominic Di Grass

Season 2

Dominic is a powerful Hollywood producer suffering a midlife crisis amidst a marital separation. Albie’s big heart may make it easy for him to carry a soft spot for his cheating father, but Dominic’s wife and daughter want nothing to do with him. Played convincingly by Michael Imperioli, Dominic seems weighed down by his guilt and claims to want to make an effort to change, but his actions prove otherwise. He tries to manipulate his son into convincing his mother to give him another chance, but he’s the same dog he’s always been.

Like Father, Like Son

Although he’s not an outward pervert like his father, Dominic is eerily similar to him. Before arriving in Sicily, he made contact with Lucia (Simona Tabasco) and hired the young sex worker to be at his beck and call for the week. Initially, he seems regretful and tries to back out of their arrangement, but he ends up cheating on his wife yet again by having a threesome with her and Mia (Beatrice Grannò). Dominic may act disgusted by his father, but he’s the man’s carbon copy. Here’s to hoping Albie breaks the toxic generational cycle.

5

Quentin

Season 2

Quentin is among the most manipulative characters in The White Lotus. At first, he came off as kind and charming. It seemed as though he would be a good influence on the lonely Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge). Their friendship sparked hope that he would help her realize her worth and teach her to enjoy life to the fullest. Viewers couldn’t have been more mistaken about the seemingly harmless, smooth-talking man played by Tom Hollander.

Snake in the Grass

The “high-end gay,” as Tanya iconically branded him, turned out to be conspiring with Greg (Jon Gries), Tanya’s husband, to murder her for her money. Quentin went about the scheme in the most conniving of ways, befriending Tanya and making her feel special. It was the greatest of betrayals because Tanya struggled to open up and let other people in. He showed her the time of her life with the intention of brutally killing her out at sea. However, his plan epically backfired. Tanya may have tragically died, but it was on her own terms and, to the satisfaction of audiences, she took Quentin down with her.

4

Cameron Sullivan

Season 2

Cameron (Theo James) is a greedy “finance bro” who travels to Sicily with his wife Daphne (Meghann Fahy), college roommate Ethan Spiller (WIll Sharpe) and Ethan’s wife Harper (Aubrey Plaza). The incompatibility of the group is evident from the get-go, with the Spillers being more down-to-earth and socially conscious, and the Sullivans living a shallow, affluent lifestyle.

A True Game Player

As Harper points out, Cameron has ulterior motives when it comes to catching up with Ethan, who has become a successful tech entrepreneur. It’s not Cameron’s manipulative and money-hungry nature that lands him on this list, but his constant need for dominance, which drives him to play the sickest of games. This includes constantly cheating on his wife, being sexually aggressive towards Harper, and manipulating Ethan to cheat on her. On top of his abhorrent behavior, he tries to convince Ethan to participate in insider training, proving he isn’t afraid to break the law so long as it gets him to number one.

3

Saxon Ratliff

Season 3

Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenneger) is the product of a wealthy, money-laundering father and a pill-popping, enabling mother (Jasoon Isaacs as Timothy and Parker Posey as Victoria). The family, which includes siblings Lochlan (Sam Nivola) and Piper (Sarah Catharine Hook), travels to Thailand so that the aforementioned sister can work on her Buddhism thesis. There’s no denying that they’re all screwed up in their own ways, but the eldest son is downright detestable.

The Quintessential Rich White Boy

From the moment he appears on the screen, Saxon shows his hideous colors. As the true embodiment of white American male privilege, he makes transphobic and disparaging comments about the trans community in Thailand. Not only does he objectify women he doesn’t know, but disgustingly sexualizes his own sister. Dripping with family money, he’s arrogant, entitled, and predatory. When he doesn’t get his way, he resorts to throwing tantrums and displaying the spoiled behavior of a child. Viewers certainly have yet to see the worst of the protein shake-chugging gymcel.

2

Shane Patton

Season 1

Jake Lacy so remarkably portrayed a smug, overly-privileged scion in The White Lotus that he earned an Emmy Award nomination. As previously mentioned, his character honeymoons in Maui with his beautiful new wife, Rachel. It’s obvious that she’s just another shiny toy to him. Shane doesn’t view her as an individual and aims to control her, going as far as guilt-tripping her into refusing a freelance assignment she wants to take. Shane does this because he wants her to give up her independence and rely solely on him.

The Ultimate Spoiled Brat

Shane is someone who has never heard “no” and who always gets what he wants, which is why he stops at nothing to get the Pineapple Suite, even as his wife begs him not to sabotage their honeymoon. He isn’t content with their opulent room that has stunning views of the ocean. No, he wants the biggest room the hotel has to offer. “Man baby” is the most fitting description for the loathsome character. His behavior is so headache-inducing that he drives Armond (Murray Bartlett) to relapse from his sobriety. In their war, Shane winds up accidentally killing the unfortunate manager.

1

Greg Hunt

Seasons 1, 2, and 3

Greg (Jon Gries) is introduced in Season 1, which sees him begin a relationship with Tanya, the wealthy shipping heiress. It isn’t until later in Season 2 that his true nefarious nature is revealed, when his plan to murder his wife to get around their iron-clad prenup is uncovered. In the current third season, he goes by “Gary,” hiding his true identity even from his young girlfriend Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon).

From Horrible Husband to Diabolical Mastermind

During his brief time with Tanya in Sicily, Greg horribly mistreats the emotionally fragile woman. He food shames her, taking digs at her weight and body. Not only does he make Tanya feel unloved and neglected, but he’s downright emotionally and mentally abusive to her. Tanya could never have imagined the depth of his greed, or that it would drive him to put her in harm’s way. She doesn’t put the pieces together until it’s too late.

On top of being a cold-blooded murderer, he concocts a story for Chloe about the death of his ex-wife, claiming that she died by suicide. If there’s one thing fans can agree on, it’s that they wish to see Greg receive his comeuppance. Fingers crossed that it comes in a bloody, excruciating fashion.
