Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II is confident that free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers will ultimately sign a deal with his club.
“We keep hearing that he’s, I guess, headed in our direction, and so that seems to be all signs are positive so far,” Rooney said Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
Head coach Mike Tomlin said Sunday the team hasn’t given Rodgers a deadline to decide his future. Rooney reportedly told the media on Tuesday that he didn’t envision the process taking this long, and they will wait “a little while longer,” Pryor.
Rodgers had a planned throwing session with the Steelers’ newly acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf a few days ago at UCLA. Rooney said the two getting together is a good sign, according to Pryor.
The 41-year-old Rodgers visited the Steelers in recent days, spending time with Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
Pittsburgh’s quarterbacks from last season, Justin Fields and Russell Wilson, departed for other franchises during free agency. Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are the only other signal-callers on the roster.
Rodgers has not spoken publicly about his potential future this offseason. The four-time MVP started all 17 games for the 5-12 New York Jets last campaign, throwing for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
