Charlie Brooker Wrote “Three or Four” Sequels to “USS Callister”

It’s been eight years since we last saw the crew of the “USS Callister” escape near-death, and they’re not doing so hot when we are reintroduced to them in episode six of Black Mirror Season 7, which is now on Netflix (and is excellent). The feature-length episode is amazing and will surely be discussed frantically by fans, but it was almost completely different. MovieWeb spoke with star Cristin Milioti (who plays Nanette Cole, both inside and outside the video game Infinity) at a press roundtable, and she disclosed that, while there were plans for a “USS Callister” sequel ever since the original aired, the actual plot has changed multiple times.

“I mean, my memory is probably fuzzy at this point, but we sort of started having conversations about a sequel very soon after the first episode aired,” explained Milioti of “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” the new sequel episode. “[Creator Charlie Brooker] knew really quickly that he wanted to revisit it. And so we had so many different discussions over the years, and it took many different forms. It was going to be like a whole series at one point. It was a different, completely different movie at one point.” She continued:

“They were completely different plots for each one. They had some similarities of just like, you know, I think the clones were always involved in some way but there were different iterations of it. But Charlie truly came up with, like, three or four completely different plots, which is just sort of astonishing. And, yeah, I want to say the only thing that made it throughout all of them were the clones and meeting themselves.”

Cristin Milioti Shares Her “Heartbreak” Over Canceled Series

“I have a lot of heartbreak over that series,” said ‘The Penguin’ star.

“What Are the Chances?”

The fact that “USS Callister: Into Infinity” exists still feels surreal and miraculous to Milioti. “You know, making anything is impossible and a miracle; anything that is made at all, let alone if it’s made well, is like a miracle. And I think you get used to, in this business, just lowering your expectations so that you don’t get your heart broken.” The actor continued:

“Because, of course, over the years that we talked about that, I was like, ‘Oh my God, this would be so fun. But like, what are the chances that this would ever happen, that so much would align, that we could all get back in a safe place, that it would be… who knows?’ So it was many years of sort of up and down and up and down and letting it go and then getting excited about it again. And I think it became really real in 2023, right before the strikes. That’s when we sort of were like, ‘Okay, we’re doing it. They’re gonna build sets. Everyone’s schedule is working out. Like, here we go.'”

Here we go, indeed, full warp speed ahead. It’s an incredible ride. See it for yourself now; Black Mirror Season 7 is streaming on Netflix through the link below:
