The Halo video game franchise has been wildly successful for a variety of reasons, beyond its groundbreaking gameplay. Dating back to Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox, the stories have consistently introduced engaging characters that users have grown to cherish and root for. That also extended to the Paramount+ series adaptation, which ran for two seasons before getting canceled last year.
Fans of the franchise certainly had their thoughts on how the video game’s story was adapted to the small screen, though one TV character that stole the show across the board was Soren-066, a Spartan candidate played to perfection by Bokeem Woodbine (Ripley, Fargo). MovieWeb recently spoke with the Emmy-nominated performer while he was promoting his latest series Government Cheese, now streaming on Apple TV+. Woodbine also weighed in on the recent cancellation of Halo and his time on the project — including the potential TV future of Soren.
“It was hurtful to see the show [canceled], and I felt like we had more of story to tell,” Woodbine told MovieWeb. “I loved working with everybody in the cast. We had such a great cast, not just in terms of talent, but everybody was just a great person. Everybody in that cast was just a great person. And yeah, I hated to see Soren go. And if I had my druthers, I’d keep it going in some kind of fashion. But no matter what it was, it was a great experience.”

Woodbine’s “Camaraderie” with David Oyelowo
For now, fans of Woodbine’s craft can at least see him shine in Government Cheese, created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr. His deadpan comedic character’s name is Bootsy, a supportive friend to the ex-con protagonist, Hampton (David Oyelowo). They’re doing what they can to make a buck in LA’s San Fernando Valley, year 1969, and Woodbine spilled to us the history behind his scene-stealing role.
“[Co-creator] Paul was so informative because there was a cat named Bootsy in real life. And so, you know, Paul just really broke down who this man was and the impression [Bootsy] made on him when he was younger. So that was the main source. But the only thing I did, other than, you know, reference Paul’s information, was I just really invested in this notion that Bootsy is very comfortable in his own skin.”

David Oyelowo is magnificent in the Apple TV+ series ‘Government Cheese,’ which may be too whimsical for its own good.
Woodbine also opened up to us about his authentic rapport with co-star Oyelowo, another reliably dynamite actor, as highlighted through their many laugh-out-loud scenes in Government Cheese:
“It was a natural camaraderie. We just hit it off as people, you know? We just hit it off, and I think we both know people that are like the people we’re portraying. We didn’t have to work too hard outside of whatever work he did and whatever preparation I did once we got on set. It just kind of naturally happened like that. It was a very natural thing. And David is just one of the best actors we have right now. He’s also a phenomenal human being. I’m honored to call on my bro.”
