Avengers: Doomsday co-writer Michael Waldron has a pick for who should play Nova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it shouldn’t be surprising. Waldron is one of the key architects of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, having created the series Loki and writing the screenplay for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Waldron is now co-writing the script for Doomsday alongside Stephen McFeely. He is also one of the co-creators of the Hulu series, Chad Powers, starring Glen Powell.
It appears that working closely with Powell has convinced Waldron that he would be great to play Richard Rider / Nova in the MCU. Speaking with The Playlist, Waldron was asked if he could cast Powell as any character within the Marvel franchise, and Waldron responded quickly with Nova. Waldron said, “He’d be a pretty good Nova.” Waldron spoke highly of his Chad Powers co-creator, talking about the creative process, saying:
“He’s my co-creator and my star, so he’s literally Chad Powers. At any time, I can just hit him up and say, ‘Would Russ do this?’ We built this character together and charted out a multi-season journey for him. He’s got a great sense of story structure, and then he goes and delivers this incredible physical performance under prosthetics. Damn him for being so good-looking while doing it.”
Could Glen Powell Finally Get the Long In-Development ‘Nova’ Project Off the Ground?

Nova was created by Marv Wolfman and John Romita Sr. and debuted in The Man Called Nova #1 in September 1976. Initially a high school-themed superhero who was inducted into the Nova Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping unit, the Richard Rider version of Nova has since grown up and become a significant part of the Marvel Universe. He was a central figure in the Annihilation storyline and has served as a member of The Secret Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Marvel Studios has seemingly been planting the seeds for Nova for over a decade, introducing the Nova Corp in Guardians of the Galaxy and the supposed destruction of the Nova Corp on Xandar in Avengers: Infinity War. A Disney+ series centered on Nova was first announced in March 2022 and originally had Sabir Pirzada attached before being replaced by Ed Bernero in December 2024. However, Nova was one of three Disney+ projects put on hold, with rumors that the plan might be to change it to a film.
Glen Powell has been a working actor for two decades, having a small role in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. For most people, he burst onto the scene in 2016 with roles in Everybody Wants Some and Scream Queens. Ever since breakout roles in Top Gun: Maverick and leading hit films like Anyone But You, Hit Man, and Twisters, he has become an in-demand star. He has been rumored for many characters at both Marvel and DC Studios, though the actor largely doesn’t seem interested in superhero titles, except for Captain Planet. Yet, given how well Waldron and Powell worked together on Chad Powers, the actor could potentially be convinced to join the MCU.
