San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is expected to miss multiple weeks due to a left calf strain, sources told Shams Charania of ESPN.
Wembanyama didn’t play in San Antonio’s win over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday because of calf tightness – his first absence this season. The team said that an MRI confirmed the injury Monday. He missed the entire second half of the 2024-25 campaign after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder during the All-Star break.
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said ahead of Sunday’s game that the team hoped to avoid unnecessary risk with the 7-foot-4 center’s lower left leg, alluding to the possible connection between calf strains and the Achilles tears that have sidelined high-profile names over the last year.
“Yeah, I think it was just something that he felt,” he said. “I don’t think there was a specific play. And, obviously, we’ve seen around this league recently, the calf tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly. So, just got to get some more information and don’t want to push it there.”
The former Rookie of the Year is averaging a career-high 26.2 points and 12.9 rebounds in 12 games this season, his third in the NBA. He also leads the NBA in blocks (3.6) for a third straight year.
Wembanyama last played in the Spurs’ loss to the Golden State Warriors on Friday, during which he played over 38 minutes, his second most in a game this season.
