The city of Gotham in the DC series, Batwoman has seen the face of its saviour changing quite a lot in the past two years. It all started with Ruby Rose stepping down as Kate Kane after an excellent Season 1 and then the introduction of Javicia Leslie as an entirely new character, Ryan Wilder, as the new Batwoman in the city. But looks like the flood of twists have not ceased yet as Batwoman will now be tending to Kate Kane’s incomplete story, with Krypton, a short-lived DC series’ star Wallis Day roped in to play the part instead of Ruby Rose. The new development has now been confirmed by the actress as well.
Season 2 of Batwoman began wth Ryan Wilder taking up the mantle of the caped crusader after Kate Kane went missing following a major plane crash in Gotham. Her death was seemingly confirmed after body parts matching her DNA washed up on the shore. But in last Sunday’s episode, [SPOILERS AHEAD], it was revealed that Kate is alive but badly injured, especially her face. We saw her lying somewhere in the sewers of Gotham, being held prisoner by someone and covered in heavy bandages. It is her iconic red necklace that confirms that the prone figure is indeed Kate Kane.

Soon after the episode aired, it was announced by showrunner Caroline Dries that actress Wallis Day will be playing the altered version of Kate Kane in Season 2. “Wallis Day is going to be playing our altered version of Kate Kane, and she’s an amazing actress,” she shared. And now, Day herself has put the stamp of confirmation on the big news.
“Super excited to finally announce I’m joining the cast of Batwoman. “I’m sure you can imagine how much this means to me and how incredible it’s been working on the show so far. Everyone’s made me feel so welcome and it’s amazing being back home with my DC family.”
Leslie being chosen as TV’s first black Batwoman has been widely celebrated but will Kate’s return mean that she will give up the title? In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Dries has assured that while Kate’s return is obviously going to complicate the situation, it won’t bring an end to Ryan’s Batwoman.
“Seeing Ryan grow into the Batsuit has been priority one from a storytelling point of view, and it’s been a beautiful journey so far witnessing Ryan take on that mantle, and she’s proven to the city by episode 8 that she is Batwoman,” Dries explained. “She belongs in the suit. And when Kate comes back, and when they discover Kate’s back, that confidence will be rattled a little bit, and she’ll start to wonder, “Well, where do I fit?” And so while the city believes in her, full heartedly, Ryan will go through her own journey of learning to believe in herself, and that’s really something we focus on towards the later part of season two.”
We can expect the upcoming episodes to deal with the mystery of Kate’s disappearance and what happened to her. Of course, the bigger question is whether she still wants to be Batwoman- if yes, we can expect friction between her and Ryan in the future. The news comes to us via Entertainment Weekly.
