Bridgerton Gets Renewed for Two More Seasons at Netflix

There’s plenty more Bridgerton where that came from, as Netflix has officially renewed the series for another two seasons. Following a highly successful first season on the streamer, Netflix initially ordered a second season back in January. With production on season 2 now underway, Netflix has gone ahead and renewed Bridgerton for seasons 3 and 4 as well.

“Bridgerton swept us off our feet,” Bela Bajaria, VP global TV at Netflix, said in a statement. “The creative team, led by Shonda [Rhimes], knew the material and delivered a beautiful, emotional, romantic drama for our members. They have some exciting plans for the future, and we think audiences will continue to swoon for this show. We’re planning to be in the Bridgerton business for a long time to come.”

Executive producer Shonda Rhimes added: “This two-season pickup is a strong vote of confidence in our work, and I feel incredibly grateful to have partners as collaborative and creative as Netflix. Betsy [Beers] and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue bringing the world of Bridgerton to a worldwide audience.

While there’s more Bridgerton to come, the series will be moving forward without its breakout star, Regé-Jean Page. In the first season, Page played male lead Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, as part of a one-year deal with the show. While it’s unfortunate that the popular actor won’t be returning for Bridgerton season 2 and beyond, this is in line with the creative direction of the story. Inspired by the original books by Julia Quinn, the plan for each season is to focus on a different member of the Bridgerton family in their own quests for marriage.

Bridgerton is executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and series creator and showrunner Chris Van Dusen. The series is set in the world of Regency London high society and follows eight close-knit siblings who must navigate the upper 10 thousand’s marriage market in search of romance, adventure, and love. Along with Page, the show’s ensemble cast includes Adjoa Andoh, Lorraine Ashbourne, Jonathan Bailey, Sabrina Bartlett, Ruth Gemmell, Claudia Jessie, Bessie Carter, and Harriet Cains.

After debuting on Netflix in January, the streamer touted viewership numbers upwards of 82 million households in its first 28 days of availability. This makes the show the most-watched original series launch to date on Netflix. The critical reception has also been rather strong, with the show earning an 89% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Bridgerton has also garnered attention at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and the AFI Awards, where it was named Top Television Program.

Meanwhile, Page fans will have other projects to look forward to. He is currently filming the Russo Brothers’ upcoming action thriller The Gray Man alongside Ryan Gosling, Jessica Henwick, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton. He has also been cast in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons live-action movie, starring in a lead role with Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith. Dungeons & Dragons will premiere on March 3, 2023. News of Bridgerton’s renewal comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
