The kids turned it out last night in New York to pay homage to the late, great Manfred Thierry Mugler. The Brooklyn Museum’s latest exhibition, Thierry Mugler: Couturissime, opened its doors for the first time in the United States and in celebration, welcomed club kids of every age for a night the legend would have been proud of.
The must-see exhibition features designs, costumes, photographs, films, and unpublished archives from the late creative, who died earlier this year of natural causes at the age of 73. In total, 130 outfits are on display, many for the first time, as well as a gallery dedicated to his iconic fragrances. His impact on today’s pop culture stars is evident throughout the exhibition, which ends in the US after stops in France, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands.
It wouldn’t be a Mugler opening without an equally over the top party. On another floor at the museum, his close friend Susanne Bartsch curated an evening filled with surprises and energy. Nightlife stars Joey Arias and Amanda Lepore performed for the crowd, as did acrobats, aerial artists, and cabaret acts. There were even silhouettes of dancers behind lit screens—a tribute to his ’90s show sets.
The crowd, mostly wearing black, went into their archives and dusted down their Mugler looks. On hand were Laverne Cox, Marc Jacobs, Kylie Jenner, Lourdes Leon, The Blonds, Richie Shazam, the Clermont Twins, Leomie Anderson, Milk, Julia Fox, Precious Kevin, Asia Balenciaga, Ajani Russell, Tyler Mitchell, Jeremy Kost, and so many more. The night carried on with guests heading to Le Bain for a party hosted by Bartsch that went until the wee hours…. just as we know Mugler would have loved!
