Simon Ateba, a journalist with the record of standing for and against the Biden administration, asked: “Be brutally honest: Does it bother you that former Biden Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre just announced she’s leaving the Democratic Party to become not a Republican but an Independent — yes or no?” The answers, of course, were from hell to heaven not supportive.
One response was to cast a cynical explanation of Jean-Pierre’s announcement: a “grifter promoting a book full of lies” who should, really, get on with “being a socialist.” Another took on a more condemning view: “She is a scumbag no matter her party of choice.” Distrust toward Jean-Pierre dominated the responses, with users recalling what they considered to be lies she told while working as press secretary.
“After lying to the public for four years, are we supposed to believe you now?” another asks sarcastically. “She’s one reason Dems are unpopular,” another weighed in, as if implying that her leaving could actually benefit the party.
Not all were completely negative. More Hartford believers took a measured tone: An Independent joked about welcoming Jean-Pierre, stating that the independents are a welcoming bunch. Speculation also arose over whether this could be a genuine expression of Jean-Pierre’s disenchantment with the Democratic Party, coupled with an attempt to redeem herself: “Going independent means she knows there was a lot of wrong and she’s trying to get past her history.”
The far-larger portion of the responses, however, was dominated by cynicism, as those replying accused Jean-Pierre of just changing the name on the label for money.
“The usual More Lies From A Pathological Liar would be more meaningful as the title of her book,” one remarked sarcastically. Others scoffed at the idea her switch is for anything real: another remarked impishly that by “independent,” she clearly means that her votes will go to Democratic candidates under any and all circumstances.
The timing of the announcement really hit the sore spot, especially with those who see Jean-Pierre as symptomatic of the Biden administration of poor communication. Either the Independent switch is a genuinely sincere ideological shift, or there is a stinking career move just waiting to begin; the court of public opinion has already passed its less-than-kind judgment upon it.

Reactions to this statement do not afford much trust towards Karine Jean-Pierre and her new career move. Whether she will be able to rebuild that trust outside of the Democratic Party is another matter, but early returns show it is not going to be easy.
