Men Adele dated before she made it big inspired some of the songs on her first two albums, “19” and “21.”
Adele’s first big heartbreak inspired her debut album, “19.” In a 2008 interview with The Guardian, she revealed she dumped the anonymous boyfriend via text. “When I broke up with my boyfriend I did it by text. ‘Babe, I can’t do it no more.'” He inspired her breakout hit, “Chasing Pavements,” and she told The Sun that he hounded her for royalties from the album after its success, per NME. “For about a week he was calling and was deadly serious about it,” she said. “Finally, I said ‘Well, you made my life hell, so I lived it and now I deserve it.'”
Adele’s fans dubbed the man who inspired her album “21” — including hits “Rolling in the Deep,” “Set Fire to the Rain,” “Someone Like You,” and “Turning Tables” — (whom she presumably dated from 2008 to 2009) Mr. 21. In an interview with Out, Adele said she would have given just about anything to be with him: “I would still be singing in the shower, of course, but yeah — my career, my friendships, my hobbies. I would have given up trying to be the best.”
