A Year Later, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is Still a Streaming Hit

Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese‘s Western thriller of 2023, is still one of the most popular films on the platform where it’s exclusively streaming. Ever since its release on Apple TV+, the film has comfortably stayed among the most-watched films, and by the time of writing, it sits in the sixth spot.

Per FlixPatrol, Killers of the Flower Moon has remained on the prestigious list for nearly a year after its premiere on the streamer on January 12, 2024. Such love from Apple TV+ subscribers doesn’t exactly match that of audience members who felt the film was too long to see in theaters. Whether the 206-minute movie by one of America’s greatest directors will be revered as a cinematic treasure remains to be seen. Only time will tell.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Brendan Fraser, and more, Killers of the Flower Moon takes viewers to 1920s Oklahoma, where the community members of the Osage Nation face a series of weird murders on their land. Per the film’s synopsis:

“When oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one – until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery.”

In the film, DiCaprio gives life to Ernest Burkhart, a World War I veteran who heads to his uncle’s reservation ranch to restart his life. William King Hale is a rancher with a close relationship to the Osage, and Burkhart falls for the wealthy Osage Mollie Kyle. Hale sees in Ernest and Mollie’s relationship an opportunity to acquire some land where he can extract oil. Eventually, the FBI arrives to investigate the unexpected deaths, which could be related to Hale’s undying greed.

Killers of the Flower Moon is based on the true-crime book of the same name by David Grann. Written by Scorsese with Academy Award winner Eric Roth, the movie received critical acclaim and still holds a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although its box office earnings reached over $158 million, the costly project cost a whopping $215 million. Curiously, the film’s main production studio, Apple Original Films, claims the film was profitable.

Killers of the Flower Moon was acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. It was on several top 10 lists of 2023’s best feature films. Its inclusion on Academy Award ballots and those of other award organizations was not a surprise; many bet the film would earn Scorsese a few awards, but this didn’t happen.

Although it earned ten nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, it failed to win any Oscars. It also garnered seven nominations at the Golden Globes, but only Lily Gladstone took a prize, as she won Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama. The lack of recognition hurt, but the wound from previous years was still fresh. Scorsese’s last film, The Irishman, also received ten nominations at the Academy Awards and went home with zero awards.
