Agent Carter Star James D’Arcy Speaks About His MCU Return

James D’Arcy’s portrayal and his name reveal in Avengers: Endgame came as a surprise for the movie fans who haven’t kept up with the MCU television productions that share the same continuity as the films. However, for the true Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, his appearance came as a massive surprise for fans as he became the first actor to transition from TV to films in the MCU and not the other way.

D’Arcy played Edwin Jarvis in Agent Carter, the human version of Paul Bettany’s J.A.R.V.I.S., who served as Iron Man’s A.I. until Age of Ultron, wherein he gained a physical form as Vision. Edwin Jarvis was Howard Stark’s butler who allied with Agent Peggy Carter in her adventures to take down S.H.I.E.L.D.’s enemies. The show came to an abrupt end after ABC canceled it after two seasons. However, D’Arcy made a surprise appearance in Avengers: Endgameamong the star-studded cameos, in a sequence set in the 80s where Tony meets his father Howard when traveling back in time to retrieve the Tessaract.

Given the fact that it was an MCU TV character making an appearance in a film set within that universe, fans were quick enough to raise questions about whether Agent Carter is canon to the franchise or not. Now, in a recent interview with Digital Spy, the actor opened up about his return to Endgame, saying:

I loved the experience, and I was really lucky – the Russo brothers have been very, very good to me, and they very sweetly invited me back to be in Endgame briefly, which was great … Someone told me afterwards, I basically became a Trivial Pursuit-type question. I’m the only character who’s gone from the television show to a film.

He also added how he had a fantastic experience with Agent Carter and the time he spent working with his brilliant co-star Hayley Atwell. He said:

What I loved about Agent Carter was, it was a really strong, female-led show, in which the protagonist – so, Agent Carter, Hayley – was a decent person, trying to do decent things, and quite often doing them in a very entertaining and fun way. I thought she was such a great role model for young women … And then there’s this sort of ridiculous sidekick, which was me. And I just had so much – I hadn’t ever really done any comedy before then.

James D’Arcy Has New Joiners in His Unique MCU Feat

D’Arcy now has two more actors who have transitioned into MCU films from the television series that wasn’t produced by Marvel Studios. After waiting for more than three years, Marvel treated fans with the re-appearance of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Not much later, Vincent D’Onofrio, who played Wilson Fisk/Kingpin on the Netflix Original Daredevil, reprised his role in Hawkeye. After those two reprisals, fans are wondering if Marvel will make shows like Agent Carter and the others canon or instead introduce new versions of those characters, now that MCU is a multiverse.

But, James D’Arcy’s appearance in Avengers: Endgame most probably confirms that his show is canon to the franchise’s films, thus making him the clinging hope for fans to make this vastly expanded collection of television productions, shorts, comic tie-ins, and films one unified entity, with everything connected and interlinked to each other in some way.

Expressing his desire to play Jarvis again and commenting on the new status of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, D’Arcy had earlier added,

Marvel universe is a funny old place. Nobody is ever dead. And now they’re into the metaverse.

Given that there is a chance for all old characters to return and crossover in future stories in the MCU, would you like to see James D’Arcy return as Jarvis? I guess what’s exciting would be for him and Paul Bettany to share a screen in any bizarre scenario!
