Amazon Freevee’s Hit Comedy ‘Jury Dity’ Returning for Season 2

Amazon Freevee’s Hit Comedy ‘Jury Dity’ Returning for Season 2

Amazon Freevee‘s Jury Duty was the surprise hit of 2023. The show plunged a single unsuspecting participant, Ronald Gladden, into an entirely fake courtroom with actors and secret cameras filming the bonkers case. The series managed to maintain the secret for all eight episodes and kept viewers engaged to the very end, desperate to see Ronald’s reaction to the ruse. You might think a show like that can only work once. But, the series has just been greenlit for a second season. Just don’t expect to return to the courtroom.

Per Deadline, Jury Duty is returning for a second season, with the show’s return moving in a completely new direction. ‘But, now that people know a second season is coming, how will they maintain the mystery?’ we hear you ask. Well, not to worry, because according to the report, the new season has already been shot and is currently in post-production. As a result, it might not be long before we see some promotional material for the new season. It is also unclear if any major names will appear in the new season (James Marsden played himself in Season 1), as, to protect the mystery of the show’s premise, all casting was done secretively.

Major details about the new season are being kept under wraps. However, the report confirmed that the next season will move out of the courtroom, and will instead focus on a company retreat for a small business which is upended when a corporate big wig shows up. The new season is reportedly inspired by the classic David vs. Goliath tale, and also drew inspiration from ’80s classics like Animal House and Caddyshack.

Can ‘Jury Duty’s Success Be Replicated?

When Jury Duty came to a close in 2023, many fans had the same reaction: ‘That was great, but it will never be able to happen again?’ Like Sacha Baron Cohen debuting Borat for the first time and the character becoming an international phenom, Jury Duty seemed like a one-and-done concept. While the series featured some absurd characters and moments, including James Marsden playing an incredibly “Hollywood” version of himself, most of the comedy and allure of the series came from Ronald not having a clue he was part of a TV show.

The concept for the new series poses some questions about how that mystery will be maintained a second time around. By setting the show in a company retreat, surely the participant should already know all the people on the retreat, having worked with them. Unless they could be a new employee and the trip is part of their workplace initiation. All of the above is purely speculative, as Amazon has yet to reveal any details about how the new season will play out. Whatever does happen, the streamer is likely hoping to achieve the same success as Season 1. As well as phenomenal viewing figures, Jury Duty was nominated for four Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
