Andor’s Tony Gilroy Has Only Spoken to George Lucas Once

Andor’s Tony Gilroy Has Only Spoken to George Lucas Once

The world of Star Wars

has come a long way since George Lucas

played around with a few miniature models and turned them into the basis for a franchise that would span over five decades and become one of the most profitable IPs in the world. As the creator of Andor, Tony Gilroy

has become a big part of the current success of the franchise, but as he revealed to MovieWeb’s George Edelman, that doesn’t necessarily mean he has become the best buddy of the franchise’s godfather.

Andor

is set to release its second and final season over the coming weeks, starting with the first three-episode drop on Disney+ on April 22. Ahead of the season premiere, Gilroy revealed that he has, surprisingly, only ever had one conversation with Lucas about the franchise.

“I’ve only spoken to George Lucas once on the phone after Rogue [One] came out, I spoke to him. He called me. That’s the only contact I’ve ever had with him.”

All roads lead to ‘Rogue One.’

As it is, Lucas’ creative mind worked its magic back in the late 1970s when he came up with the almost sure-to-fail idea of a space-based family drama involving people hitting each other with sticks of light and the main protagonist having daddy issues with the franchise’s antagonist. Gilroy is no different to Lucas, and has dedicated years of his life to being a creator, which means he has been “addicted” to continuing to build the universe started by Lucas all those years ago.

“If you really like making things up. That’s my life, that’s the life we have chosen. And this is the absolute maximal, like deep dive into your imagination. So, every day, for five years, you’re writing, you’re designing, you’re choosing. I can’t tell you how addictive it is. It’s the greatest hideout of all time. And you just get stronger at it and, and it’s been very difficult to decompress off of it afterwards, but it’s the ultimate imaginative experience for five years.”

‘Andor’ Season 2 Has No Surprise Outcome, but the Journey Will Be Epic

Disney+

When it comes to a series like Andor, there are no surprises about where the story is heading. Everyone knows that the second season of the show will end as a direct lead into the events of Rogue One. However, that simply makes it a show that is all about the journey, and how the characters get from where they were at the end of Season 1 to where they are at the beginning of Rogue One.

Despite that, several stars have teased reveals for their characters that fans probably will not be anticipating, and with the season charting several years, with each block of three episodes acting as a “season within a season,” there is still a lot of ground to be covered before Andor’s story is completed.

Hopes are incredibly high that Andor can continue to deliver the kind of storytelling that made it one of the highest-rated shows on Disney+, and of the entire Star Wars franchise. Having taken several years to bring Andor back to screens, it could well prove to be another incredible entry in the space saga’s history.
